Competition cars topped the results at Bonhams’ Goodwood Revival sale on 8 September. An ex- Martin Brundle/Alain Ferté/Jan Lammers 1990 Jaguar XJR-11 narrowly missed its lower estimate, selling for £1,191,000 (estimate £1,200,000 – 1,500,000). Chassis 490 – the third and final XJR-11 built by TWR JaguarSport – was campaigned extensively in period and more recently underwent a comprehensive restoration by JD Classics.
A 1964 Shelby Cobra 289 – one of only 32 factory-built competition cars – set a European auction record for the marque, finding a new home at a mid-estimate £1,359,000.
Rounding off the top five; a 1964 Ferrari 250 GT/L ‘Lusso’, owned by the vendor for 46 years, made £921,666 (estimate £1,000,000 – 1,500,000); an ex-Royal Household 1955 Rolls-Royce Phantom IV State Landaulette took £800,000 (estimate £1,000,000 – 2,000,000); and a 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster fetched £754,200 (estimate £700,000 – 850,000).
Notable results also included a 1937 SS Jaguar 100 3½-Litre which soared above its £400,000 – 500,000 estimate, selling for £631,000; an ex-Keith Richards 1972 Ferrari Dino 246 GT at £442,750 (estimate £300,000 – 400,000); and an 1,161-mile 1995 Rolls-Royce Corniche Convertible IV set a new world-record price for the model at £255,300 (estimate £200,000 – 250,000).
Bonhams reported a total of just under £16 million from its 20th Goodwood Revival Sale.
RM Sotheby’s London sale saw a one owner 2003 Ferrari Enzo which had covered less than 6,100km from new make £1,973,750, against an estimate of £1,850,000 – 2,000,000.
A 1953 Ferrari 212 Europa also achieved a strong result at £1,017,500 (estimate £810,000 – 1,000,000), as did a 1993 Porsche 911 RS 3.8 – one of three right-hand drive examples produced – at £933,125 (estimate £800,000 – 1,000,000) and a single-family owner 1971 Iso Grifo 7-Litre Series II at its upper-estimate of £500,000.
Star performer at Classic Car Auctions’ 15 September sale was a 1968 Jensen Interceptor which blitzed its £40,000 – 45,000 estimate, changing hands for £85,800. The four-owner car is believed to be one of just eight remaining manual-gearbox Mk 1 Interceptors, and had been the subject of a £40,000 restoration by renowned marque specialists Cropredy Bridge in 2012.
Historics at Brooklands’ immaculate matching numbers 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Coupe just pipped its lower estimate, selling for £425,600 on 22 September. Resplendent in its original scheme of Nero Tropicane over beige hide, chassis 0975GT came with a comprehensive history file and had been restored by Peter Rosenmayer Sport and Race Cars in Stuttgart at a cost of some €60,000 in 2010.
Total sales of £3.3 million were generated with a sell-through rate of 70% from the 162 lots on offer.
Dallas Burston Polo Club played host to Silverstone Auctions’ two-day event, kicking off with its single-marque Porsche sale on 28 September. Notable highlights included a 71,155-mile Pastel Yellow 1998 911 Turbo S – one of only 26 UK right-hand drive examples – taking £185,625 (estimate £165,000 – 185,000); a 400-mile 2018 911 GT3 Touring selling for £191,250 (estimate £150,000 – 175,000); and a one-of-53 1989 911 Turbo LE with 30,000 miles from new bringing £151,875 (estimate £130,000 – 150,000).
Silverstone Auctions have been regularly unearthing in-demand ‘fast Fords’ in recent years and their inaugural September event added two new world record auction prices to their results tally. A meticulously restored 1972 Escort RS1600 in Le Mans Green sold for £70,875 (estimate £60,000 – 70,000), while a 1990 Sierra Sapphire Cosworth 4x4 with one lady owner and 13,310 miles from new drew an estimate-busting £52,875 (estimate £30,000 – 35,000).
