An 8,884-km Ferrari Enzo headed the UK auction results for the month, making £1,805,000 at RM Sotheby’s London sale (estimate £1,600,000 – 1,800,000).
RM’s sale also featured a 1955 Bentley R Type Continental Fastback, in single-family ownership since 1983, which took the second highest price on the day, selling for £826,250 (estimate £775,000 – 900,000); followed by an 18,000-km 1996 Porsche 911 GT2 at £775,625 (estimate £675,000 – 750,000) and a one-owner 2,600-km 2012 Lexus LFA at a mid-estimate £308,750.
Other highlights included a 2014 Land Rover Defender SVX, one of 10 built for the James Bond film Spectre, which smashed its £100,000 – 150,000 estimate, fetching £230,000 and a 1980 Renault 5 Turbo, presented in Tour de Course livery, brought £166,750 (estimate £120,000 – 140,000).
The eagerly awaited sale of the late Jack Sears’ 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 at Bonhams’ Goodwood Revival sale didn’t disappoint. The 7-litre’ Lightweight’ thundered past its £180,000 – 220,000 pre-sale estimate, achieving a mighty £471,900.
Other strong results from the eight-car Jack Sears Collection included a 1938 Rolls-Royce Phantom III Limousine – owned by the family since new – at £171,740 (estimate £80,000 – 120,000); a one-owner 75,198-mile 1986 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16 at £25,300 (estimate £12,000 – 15,000); and a 1948 MG TC at £28,750 (estimate £18,000 – 22,000).
Top sale on the day went to a 55,117-mile 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 'Daytona' at £606,300 (estimate £550,000 – 600,000); while a 1964 Aston Martin DB5 realised a mid-estimate £561,500, a 1935 Lagonda LG45 4½-Litre Monte Carlo Rally Team Car took an impressive £371,100 (estimate £250,000 – 300,000) and a 1964 Morris Mini Cooper 'S' 1275 with Downton upgrades made an equally remarkable £63,100 (estimate £32,000 – 38,000).
Bonhams reported total sales in excess of £10.7 million from the Revival sale.
Pre-war machinery dominated the results at Bonhams’ Beaulieu sale on 2 September, with the 1921 Napier 'Blue Bird' Homage claiming top honours, selling for £264,700 (estimate £250,000 – 300,000). Rounding out the top three; a 1927 Rolls-Royce 40/50hp Silver Ghost 'Piccadilly' Roadster went for £247,900 (estimate £220,000 – 260,000) and a 1920 Vauxhall 30/98 E-type realised £219,900 (estimate £220,000 – 260,000).
Star lot at Silverstone Auctions’ Salon Privé sale on 2 September was a one-owner 35,000-mile 1989 Porsche 911 Turbo SE ‘Flat Nose’ Cabriolet which sailed above its £190,000 – 220,000 estimate, selling for £245,250 – a new UK auction record for the model.
Other notable highlights included a 1992 Porsche 911 RS N/GT at £194,625 (estimate £185,000 – 215,000); a 1974 Lamborghini Urraco P250 at £96,188 (estimate £85,000 – 95,000); and a 30,000-mile Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Vl 'Tommi Makinen Edition’ at £46,688 (estimate £34,000 – 39,000) – setting another UK auction record for a model.
Silverstone Auctions achieved total sales of £2.75 million at Salon Privé and a 52% sell-through rate.
A rare manual gearbox 1975 Jaguar XJS smashed its £10,000 – 15,000 estimate, selling for £38,812 at H&H’s National Motorcycle Museum sale on 2 September. Owned by the vendor for some 30 years, the V12 coupe had covered 57,300 miles from new and was the 170th right-hand drive example built.
DVCA’s 1972 Jensen Interceptor made a well-deserved £19,800 on 7 September, comfortably exceeding its £6,000 – 8,000 pre-sale estimate. The two-owner car showing 58,000 miles had been regularly maintained and was supplied with MOT certificates dating back to 1977.
A three-owner 1967 Daimler Sovereign which had covered 53,500 miles during its 50 year life made a mid-estimate £14,500 at Charterhouse’s sale on 13 September.
Jaguars finding new homes at Barons’ 16 September sale included a recently restored 1959 Mk IX at £44,000 (estimate £35,000 – 40,000); a three-owner 67,500-mile 1969 E-Type Series II 2+2 at £40,150 (estimate £22,500 – 27,000); and a 1959 XK 150 3.4 FHC SE which was the subject of a five year rebuild sold for £35,860 (estimate £20,000 – 30,000).
Top lot at Classic Car Auctions on 23 September was a two-owner 31,500-mile 1988 Porsche Carrera Supersport which soared past its £60,000 – 70,000 estimate, selling for £99,000. Other standout performances included a 1991 Audi Quattro with 32,233 miles on the clock which made over double its lower estimate, going for £72,050; a 94,000-mile 1994 Porsche 928 GTS at £39,600 (estimate £30,000 – 35,000); and a 92,549-mile 1988 Porsche 944 Turbo ‘Silver Rose’ at £34,100 (estimate £20,000 – 25,000).
Historics at Brooklands also hosted its sale on the 23rd, where a 1966 Maserati Sebring which was restored in the early 2000s wound up as the star lot of the day, finding a new home at £269,920 (estimate £180,000 – 220,000). Other significant sales included a recently restored 1958 Jaguar XK 150 SE Drophead Coupe at £137,760 (estimate £100,000 – 130,000); a 15,200-mile 2003 Ferrari 575M, optioned with the Fiorano Handling pack made a mid-estimate £101,920; and a one-owner 1979 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow which had covered just 24,623 from new brought over double its lower estimate, selling for £42,560.
Historics reported a 73% sell-through rate overall.
A 1966 Jaguar E-Type Series I 4.2 Coupe topped the results at Brightwells Classic and Vintage sale on 27 September, making £101,200 – just above its upper estimate, while the UK’s first registered Sunbeam Tiger took £53,900 (estimate £43,000 – 48,000).
