Highlight of the European auction calendar in September was undoubtedly the single-marque Ferrari sale, hosted by RM Sotheby’s in partnership with Ferrari at the legendary Pista di Fiorano.
Star of the show was a one-of-a-kind LaFerrari Aperta. With only 209 Apertas originally set to be produced the winning bidder can look forward to owning the 210th example which will be built later in the year, with a unique metallic Rosso Fuoco livery and bespoke interior. Fierce bidding ensured the €3,000,000 – 4,000,000 pre-sale estimate was quickly surpassed, the hypercar eventually selling for a winning bid of €8,300,000 – a world record for a 21st century car – with all proceeds being donated to Save the Children.
A 32,586-km 1959 250 GT LWB California Spider recorded the second highest result at the sale, making €7,855,000 (estimate €7,500,000 – 9,500,000), followed by a 1958 250 GT Cabriolet Series I at €4,719,000 (estimate €4,700,000 – 5,500,000); a 1955 750 Monza at €3,375,000 (estimate €3,400,000 – 3,800,000); and a 729-km 1985 288 GTO rounded off the top five, selling for €3,263,000 (estimate €3,250,000 – 4,000,000).
New auction records were also established with a 1969 365 GTB/4 Daytona, the only road-going ‘Alloy’ coupe, fetching €1,807,000 (estimate €1,400,000 – 1,700,000); a 2016 488 Spider ‘Green Jewel’ – a unique livery inspired by David Piper’s 365 P2 – going for €1,090,200 (estimate €320,000 – 380,000); and a 3,267-km 1983 400i, owned from new by Rolling Stones legend Keith Richards, which took an incredible €345,000 (estimate €125,000 – 175,000).
RM reported total sales in excess of €63 million and a sell-through rate of 92.5%.
A 1960 Maserati 3500 GT Spyder topped the charts at Bonhams’ Chantilly sale on 10 September when it sold for €664,601 (estimate €800,000 – 1,000,000).
Pre-war success included a 1937 Horch 853 ‘Stromlinien’ coupe design at €460,000 (estimate €700,000 – 900,000) and a 1935 Frazer Nash TT Replica Shelsley which crept just above its lower estimate, changing hands for €201,250.
Other highlights included a 1953 Aston Martin DB2 Vantage Cabriolet achieving €402,500 (estimate €370,000 – 470,000); a two-owner 1969 Citroën DS21 Décapotable found a new home at €184,000 (estimate €165,000 – 195,000); and a unique road registered 1989 Ferrari 328 Concisco Concept Car – based on a low-mileage Ferrari 328 GTS with coachwork by Michalak – which sold for €115,000.
