A 1969 Lamborghini Miura P400 S, offered in an unrestored state, headed the results at RM Sotheby’s London sale on 24 October. Strong interest ensured the two-owner car eclipsed its £800,000 – 1,000,000 estimate, selling for £1,248,125 – not long after Sotheby’s had set a new world record in the same room, with a bottle of 60-year-old Macallan single malt whisky fetching £1,452,000.
The ex- Henri Toivonen 1985 Lombard RAC Rally-winning Lancia Delta S4 took a mid-estimate £764,375, while the top five was rounded off with a 7,757-mile ‘Chairs and Flares’ 1973 Ferrari Dino 246 GT at £432,500 (estimate £390,000 – 450,000); a UK-delivered left-hand drive 1961 Maserati 3500 GT Spider drew £410,000 (estimate £450,000 – 600,000); and a recently restored 1961 Ferrari 250 GTE 2+2 smashed its £325,000 – 375,000 estimate, taking £404,375.
Notable highlights also included a 1973 Iso Grifo GL, in single-family ownership from new, at £230,000 (estimate £180,000 – 220,000), plus two entries from the Youngtimer Collection; a 77,500-km 1992 Mercedes-Benz 300 CE 6.0 AMG Hammer selling for £207,000 (estimate £180,000 – 220,000) and a 1974 BMW 2002 turbo which had covered just 132km since a meticulous restoration made £94,875 (estimate £110,000 – 120,000).
RM Sotheby’s reported a £9.4 million sale total and a 72% sell-through rate.
Both the BMW 1Ms on offer at Classic Car Auctions’ 5 October sale found new homes, the 90-mile single-family owned example selling for £59,385 (estimate £60,000 – 70,000) and the 49,000-miler achieving £30,525 (estimate £30,000 – 35,000); while a 1985 BMW 735i with only 18,000 miles on the clock brought a well-deserved £17,205 (estimate £14,000 – 18,000).
Among the Fords on offer, a 1970 Capri 2000 GT XLR – with one owner until 2016 – that had been the subject of a nut-and-bolt restoration raised a mid-estimate £27,195; a 1974 Capri RS3100 took £53,280 (estimate £50,000 – 60,000); and a 29,000-mile 1983 Escort RS1600i sold for £19,980 (estimate £20,000 – 24,000).
H&H successfully hammered away its pre-sale star, the unrestored 10,000-mile 1974 Ferrari Dino 246 GT bringing £303,750 (estimate £225,000 – 275,000).
The auction also saw a one owner 32,000-mile 1991 Audi Quattro 20V with a full Audi service history smash its £65,000 – 75,000 estimate, changing hands for £84,375.
