H&H’s ex-Woolf Barnato 1929 Bentley 4½ Litre 'Le Mans' Style Tourer made an impressive £855,000 at their Imperial War Museum sale, just pipping its £750,000 – 850,000 estimate.
A 1936 Delahaye 135 Speciale Evocation which was built in the 1980s using a Type 132 chassis fetched £137,812 (estimate £140,000 – 160,000), while a 1961 Maserati 3500 GT – one of 40 produced in right-hand drive – rounded off the top three sales at £126,000 (estimate £90,000 – 110,000).
Other strong results included a 1950 Bentley Mk VI Park Ward Drophead Coupe, believed to be one of just four built, which changed hands for £115,875 (estimate £90,000 – 110,000); a recently painted and re-trimmed 1968 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL brought a mid-estimate £90,000; and a 1955 Jaguar XK 140 SE Roadster, converted to right-hand drive after being imported from the US in the late ‘80s, drew £76,500 (estimate £65,000 – 85,000).
A 1971 Jensen FF requiring recommissioning achieved £31,000 (estimate £45,000 – 50,000) at Richard Edmonds’ 20 October sale. Highlights among the pre-war success were a 1924 Lancia Lambda Series III at £31,500 (estimate £40,000 – 50,000), and a 1935 Alvis Speed 20/25 SC Special which made its lower estimate, selling for £30,000.
A 1930 Frazer Nash Super Sport comfortably exceeded its £150,000 – 180,000 pre-sale estimate at Brightwells on 24 October, selling for £207,200 – the top result of the day. The sale also saw a 1933 Lagonda 3-Litre Tourer realise £85,120 (estimate £80,000 – 100,000), and a 1928 Amilcar CGSS Riley Kerr-Bate Special which raced in period at Brooklands took £76,160 (estimate £70,000 – 90,000).
Two days later SWVA’s 1970 Ford Escort Twin Cam which had seen little use since a complete nut-and-bolt restoration blitzed its estimate of £29,000 – 30,000, finding a new home at £46,500.
