Bonhams kicked off the US auction month with its Philadelphia sale on 2 October, held at the Simeone Foundation Museum. Star attraction was a 1913 Rolls-Royce 40/50 Silver Ghost London-to-Edinburgh Tourer – one of 188 examples built – which fetched $1,001,000 (estimate $1,100,000 – 1,500,000).
Strong demand for pre-war machinery saw a 1913 Stevens-Duryea Model C 6 Five-Passenger Touring go for $170,500 (estimate $150,000 – 225,000); a 1910 Regal Model N Underslung Roadster made $165,000 (estimate $100,000 – 150,000); and a 1937 Mercedes-Benz 230N Roadster took $149,600 (estimate $100,000 – 125,000).
RM Sotheby’s Hershey auction on 5-6 October generated a sale total of $15.9 million, with an impressive 96% sell-through rate. 140 cars crossed the block, headed by the 1933 Pierce-Arrow Silver Arrow from the Thomas F. Derro Collection which brought $2,310,000 (estimate $2,000,000 – 3,000,000).
Other success among the top-tier American classics included a 1935 Duesenberg Model J Cabriolet – with one-off coachwork by d’leteren – at $1,485,000 (estimate $1,500,000 – 2,000,000); an award-winning 1936 Cadillac V-16 Convertible Sedan at $715,000 (estimate $700,000 – 850,000); a 1935 Packard Twelve Sport Phaeton at $495,000 (estimate $475,000 – 575,000); and a 1937 Cord 812 Supercharged Cabriolet which smashed its $300,000 – 350,000 estimate, selling for $412,500.
