A BMW M1 that carried off the Owners’ Choice award at this year’s Salon Privé topped the results at Silverstone Auctions’ two-day Live Online sale in November, hammered away for £382,500 (estimate £385,000 – 435,000).
Best-placed competition car was the ex-Jean-Luc Thérier 1982 French Rally Championship-winning Renault 5 Turbo Group 4 at £337,500 (estimate £340,000 – 380,000), while Nick Whale’s 1987 BMW M3 in Tarmac Rally-spec also found a new home, selling for £101,250 (estimate £100,000 – 120,000).
Highlights among the Porsches on offer included a two-owner 10,325-mile 1988 928 S4 SE which set a new auction record for the model at £129,375 – over double its lower estimate; a left-hand drive 1973 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring, restored in the late 2000s at a cost in excess of £180,000, made £315,000 (estimate £300,000 – 350,000); and a 1974 911 Carrera 2.7 Targa, one of only 2 UK cars supplied in 1974 in Karminrot, fetched £101,250 (£100,000 – 120,000).
Silverstone Auctions generated an £8 million sale total, with a 78% sell-through rate.

A 50th Anniversary Land Rover Defender 90 with a pre-sale guide of £40,000 – 50,000 changed hands for £42,560 at Brightwells’ timed online auction. One of just 50 supplied to Japan (out of a worldwide production of 1,071), the Defender had been used sparingly since returning to the UK in 2017 and showed 75,600km at the time of cataloging.
The one-owner 8,032-mile 2002 Morgan Plus 8 drew a well-deserved £36,075 (estimate £25,000 – 30,000), and a 1964 Ford Lotus Cortina rounded off the top three results at a mid-estimate £33,600.

The star performer at H&H’s 25 November online auction was a left-hand drive 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL, listed at £65,000 – 75,000. The SL had been restored around 10 years ago and was imported into the UK from Dubai in 2016. Offered with a factory hardtop and 24,205 miles on the clock, it commanded a winning bid of £67,500.
Success among the British machinery on offer included a 1955 Jaguar XK 140 Fixed Head Coupe with modern upgrades for touring that sold for £55,125 (estimate £55,000 – 65,000); a 42,584-mile left-hand drive 1972 Jaguar E-Type V12 Coupe with a manual gearbox at £39,938 (estimate £40,000 – 45,000); and a two-owner 1961 Daimler SP250 with just 38,442 miles – consigned from a private collection where it was dry stored since 1997 – brought £28,125 (estimate £34,000 – 38,000).
