Artcurial’s 14th Automobiles sur les Champs sale in Paris on 4 November saw both its star attractions find new homes, contributing significantly towards the sale total of €4.39 million. Delivered new to Crown Prince SAR Moulay Hassan, the 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster – owned by the consignor since 1973 – topped the results, fetching a mid-estimate €997,600, while the 1937 BMW 328 also eclipsed its lower estimate, selling for €596,000.
Highlights among the French machinery included a 1965 Citroën DS 19 Cabriolet Chapron Palm Beach which drew €174,032 (estimate €180,000 – 260,000); a 1962 Facel II with recent bills for €31,000 achieved a robust €274,160 (estimate €180,000 – 280,000); and a 1974 Ligier JS2 brought a mid-estimate €81,056.
All five Jaguars changed hands, led by a 1956 XK 140 Drophead Coupe at €100,128 (estimate €95,000 – 115,000). The car, which had been optioned with the desirable C-Type head, was delivered new to Los Angeles – the USA’s first Jaguar dealership – and remained in California for the majority of its life.
Strong results at Aguttes on 10 November included a 1962 Jaguar E-Type Series I 3.8 Coupe – complete with a Jaguar Heritage Certificate following its meticulous restoration – selling for €132,400 (estimate €120,000 – 160,000); and a 1976 Alfa Romeo Giulia 2000 GTV, converted to a 'Gullwing' configuration by its late owner, was successfully hammered away at €106,440 – more than double its lower estimate.
The sale also featured a 1982 Audi Quattro that was unearthed in the basement of a Parisian car park, where it had resided since 1995, which trounced its €15,000 – 25,000 estimate, recording a sale at €43,900.
The 1966 Paris Salon Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 was the top performer at Osenat’s 11 November sale, bringing €246,000 (estimate €200,000 – 250,000), while a 54,700-km 1968 Maserati Ghibli 4.7 made its lower estimate €180,000.
Both the ex-Pierre Bergé entries soared past their pre-sale estimates; the 1963 Jaguar Mk II 3.8 blitzing its €30,000 – 40,000 guide, taking €74,400 and the recently restored 1977 Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL 6.9 went for €44,400 (estimate €25,000 – 35,000).
