November 2017 - US auction highlights
14 December, 2017
Michael Schumacher’s 2001 Monaco Grand Prix-winning Ferrari F2001 became the most valuable modern era F1 car sold at auction, achieving $7,504,000 at Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening sale in New York on 16 November.
The car swiftly exceeded its $4,000,000 – 5,500,000 pre-sale estimate, before being hammered away to a private collector on the telephone for more than double the previous record.
Five days earlier Bonhams hosted its 50-lot Bothwell Collection sale where the star attraction – a 1914 Peugeot L45 Grand Prix Two Seater – realised an equally impressive $7,260,000 against an estimate of $3,000,000 – 5,000,000.
Other highlights in the renowned collection included a 1908 Benz 75/105HP Prinz-Heinrich Raceabout which fetched $1,870,000 (estimate $1,000,000 – 1,500,000); a 1908 Mercedes-Simplex 65hp Two Seater Raceabout made $1,072,500 (estimate $900,000 – 1,200,000); and a 1910 Pope-Hartford Model W 50hp "Racer" found a new home at $264,000 (estimate $80,000 – 100,000).
