A 1903 Panhard et Levassor Model B 10hp claimed the honours for the top price achieved in November, taking £326,666 at Bonhams’ London to Brighton Run sale (estimate £350,000 – 400,000).
Strong results included a 1902 Westfield Model G 13hp at £287,100 (estimate £200,000 – 220,000); an 1898 Germain 6hp Limousine at £225,500 (estimate £150,000 – 220,000); and a 1903 Darracq Model H 12hp which changed hands for £203,100 (estimate £120,000 – 160,000).
ACA’s pre-sale star attraction, a 1983 Porsche 911 Turbo, fetched £60,000 at its 4 November sale (estimate £65,000 – 75,000); while a 1961 Austin-Healey 3000 MKII BN7 made £54,600 (estimate £58,000 – 65,000) and a 1967 Alvis TF21 – the last Park Ward bodied TF built – smashed its £15,000 – 18,000 estimate, selling for £39,900.
A 1960 Jensen 541R in need of recommissioning soared above its £20,000 – 25,000 estimate, going for £31,000 at Charterhouse. Highlights among the pre-war success included a 1934 Sunbeam Twenty Five at £40,000 (estimate £40,000 – 50,000) and a 1927 Buick Tourer which just pipped its lower estimate, selling for £12,500.
Fords dominated the headlines at Silverstone Auctions’ NEC Classic Motor Show from 11-12 November. A 6,000-mile 1988 Sierra Cosworth RS 500 took £112,500 (estimate £100,000 – 115,000); a 927-mile 1980 Escort RS2000 Custom brought £97,875 (estimate £80,000 – 90,000); and an 837-mile 1996 Escort Cosworth sold for £91,125 (estimate £85,000 – 95,000).
Other strong performers included a 5,500-mile 1988 Capri 280 Brooklands at £47,250 (estimate £45,000 – 55,000) and a 1983 Fiesta XR2, with some 46,000 miles from new, achieved £22,500 (estimate £15,000 – 20,000).
A 1968 Jensen Interceptor MkI, originally owned by Eric Morecambe found a new home at £95,625 (estimate £90,000 – 110,000). The car was the subject of a recently completed restoration to concours condition by renowned marque specialists Cropredy Bridge.
Silverstone Auctions reported a sale total of £3.6 million and a 67% sell-through.
Star lot at H&H’s Imperial War Museum sale on 15 November was a 49,000-mile 1966 Jaguar E-Type Series I 4.2 Roadster which made £151,875 (estimate £140,000 – 180,000). Other Jaguars changing hands included a rare 1970 E-Type Series III 2+2, believed to be one of just six factory development cars fitted with a 4.2 litre engine, which sold for £81,000 and a 1958 XK 150 S 3.4 Roadster fetched £135,000 (estimate £130,000 – 150,000).
Elsewhere, strong bidding for a brace of Mercedes Benz 300 ‘Adenauer’ projects which had been owned by the same family since the ‘70s saw the 1954 cabriolet realise over double its lower estimate, selling for £104,420, while the 1956 saloon took £16,875 (estimate £8,000 – 12,000).
A 1972 BMW 3.0 CSL sailed past its £95,000 – 125,000 pre-sale estimate, bringing £136,640 at Historics at Brooklands on 25 November. The right-hand drive example was restored by North Oxford BMW and remained in their collection until 2012 when the current vendor – a retired BMW director – acquired the car.
Other notable sales included an 84,500-mile 1986 BMW M635 CSi at £31,920 (estimate £18,000 – 24,000); a left-hand drive 1973 Alfa Romeo Montreal at £54,880 (estimate £40,000 – 48,000); and a 13,035-mile 1997 Bentley Turbo R set an auction record for the model at £44,800 (estimate £24,000 – 28,000).
Brightwells reported a sell-through rate close to 80% and a total of £1.2 million from its 29 November sale. Heading the results was a 1963 Jaguar E-Type Series I 3.8 Roadster – in need of work and with a non-original engine – which far exceeded expectations, selling for £73,150 (estimate £45,000 – 55,000); and a 1936 Riley 12/4 Sports Special, built by marque expert Keith Pointing, went for £71,500 (estimate £45,000 – 50,000).
