Silverstone Auctions maintained its 100% record for Aston Martin sales in 2021, with all 10 cars finding new homes at its May auction. A 1967 DB6 Volante which had been upgraded to Vantage specification and fitted with a manual gearbox led the results at £380,250 (estimate £340,000 – 390,000).
Record prices were achieved for a 5,400-km 1995 Lancia Delta HF Integrale Evo 2 ‘Edizione Finale’ at £218,250 (estimate £145,000 – 165,000) and a 49,000-mile 1999 Subaru Impreza 22B-STi Type UK at £171,000 (estimate £120,000 – 140,000) – establishing new benchmarks for both models; while an ex-Petter Solberg 2004 Subaru Impreza S10 WRC also changed hands, selling for £369,000 (estimate £385,000 – 450,000).
A 1972 Lotus Elan Sprint Convertible from British racing driver Steve Soper’s collection fetched an impressive £65,250 (estimate £58,000 – 65,000). The Elan was sold with its original sales invoices and a wealth of history and documents to support its mileage of 21,886.

Star performers at H&H in May included a 20,825-mile 2007 Aston Martin DB9 making £36,000 (estimate £30,000 – 34,000) at its online only auction, while the Duxford sale held two weeks later delivered an all British top three; a 1952 Bentley Mk VI 4.5 Litre Drophead Coupe at £98,333 (estimate £100,000 – 120,000), a 1929 Rolls-Royce 20/25 Tourer – exhibited at the 1929 Olympia Motor Show – took £92,250 (estimate £45,000 – 55,000), and a 1949 Bentley Mk VI 'Pillarless' Coupe drew £84,333 (estimate £85,000 – 95,000).

A 1974 Alpine A110 1600S that ran in the 1975 Targa Florio was hammered away for a low-estimate £105,000 at Historics’ Ascot Racecourse sale on 15 May. Finishing 23rd overall and 3rd in class in the hands of Rubino/Vesco, the Alpine was sold soon after the race and remained in storage until 2008, more recently being recommissioned by its custodian at the time – a former Le Mans team owner.

Bonhams posted a 95% sell-through rate at its first traditional live UK auction of the year, held at its Bond Street HQ, with a 1968 Aston Martin DB6 Volante bringing the top sale of the day at £425,500 (estimate £400,000 – 500,000).
Among the other highlights; a 1976 Maserati Khamsin which had been restored from 2008-12 by renowned marque specialists McGrath Maserati brought £110,400 (estimate £120,000 – 150,000), and a 1962 Lancia Flaminia Sport 3C 2.5, the subject of a recently completed £322,000 Thornley Kelham restoration went for £281,750 (estimate £280,000 – 340,000).

Brightwells’ timed online platform found buyers for 89% of its catalogue in May. Notable success included a 1963 Aston Martin Lagonda Rapide at £100,800 (estimate £120,000 – 150,000) and both Bristol 400s; the ex-factory development car ‘KHU 303’ raising £76,160 (estimate £68,000 – 75,000) and a 1948 example from the John Malyan Collection selling for £41,440 (estimate £40,000 – 60,000).
