RM Sotheby’s 1954 Ferrari 500 Mondial Spider changed hands for €3,717,500 (estimate €4,250,000 – 4,750,000) at Villa Erba on 25 May, with the auction house reporting a sale total of €19.8 million from the biennial event.
A 1957 Porsche 550A Spyder – one of 40 examples built – narrowly missed its lower estimate, fetching €3,380,000. Chassis 0121 was delivered new to Denmark, where it enjoyed competition success in the hands of Julius Voigt-Nielsen, prior to its sale and subsequent export to East Africa where it remained until the late 1970s.
Other ‘blue-chip’ sales included 1965 Aston Martin Short-Chassis Volante which soared above its €1,300,000 – 1,500,000 estimate, taking €1,805,000; a recently restored 1955 Fiat 8V – one of just 26 coupes built by Zagato – at €1,771,250 (estimate €1,600,000 – 1,800,000); and a 1931 Bugatti Type 50 Roadster which is the sole surviving example to retain its original Jean Bugatti-designed coachwork went for €1,411,250 (estimate €1,400,000 – 1,800,000).
Finarte’s 13 May sale in Brescia saw a 1931 Fiat 522 C Torpedo Sport trounce its €400,000 – 500,000 estimate, bringing €518,625. Chassis 2336 is believed to be the 1932 London Motor Show car and the only remaining Torpedo Sport in existence.
A 1972 Ferrari Dino 246 GT was the star attraction at Aste Bolaffi on 24 May, finding a new home at €330,000 – bang on its upper estimate. The two-owner circa 40,000-km example had remained in Italy from new and is one of just 247 finished in Bianco Polo.
Oldtimer Galerie’s Swiss Classic World sale in Lucerne rounded off the European auction month. Notable highlights included the top sale of the day, a 1969 Maserati Ghibli 4.7 at CHF207,200 (estimate CHF195,000 – 225,000); while a 1961 Chevrolet Corvette made CHF123,200 (estimate CHF95,000 – 105,000); a four-owner 1958 Mercedes-Benz 220 S Cabriolet drew CHF91,840, smashing its guide of CHF58,000 – 68,000; and a 1973 Citroën DS23 ie Pallas that received a meticulous 160,000 Franc restoration brought CHF92,400 (estimate CHF75,000 – 100,000).
