An ex-Mike Hailwood 1966 Iso Griffo was the top sale at Silverstone Auctions on 19 May, beating its £220,000 – 260,000 estimate, bringing £270,000.
Seven out of the 10 Porsches on offer found new homes, led by a 1973 911 S 2.4 which brought £166,500 (estimate £160,000 – 180,000). A three-owner 1980 911 Turbo with just 16,092-miles from new changed hands for £129,375 (estimate £125,000 – 150,000); while an 8,900-mile 1989 944 S2 Cabriolet fetched £32,625 (estimate £28,000 – 32,000) and a 20,300-mile 1986 911 Carrera 3.2 took a mid-estimate £76,500.
Other highlights included a 12,000-mile 1987 Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth at £112,500 (estimate £90,000 – 105,000); a 1967 Jaguar E-Type Series 1.5 Roadster selling for £105,750 – over £30,000 above its lower estimate; a restoration-project 1985 Renault 5 Turbo 2 ‘Type 8221’ going for £55,125 (estimate £25,000 – 30,000); and a 1973 Ford Escort Mk1 Mexico setting a new world record auction price at £50,625 (estimate £38,000 – 44,000).
The previous day Silverstone Auctions held its inaugural Sale of Ferraris. Stand-out performances included a 35,900-mile 1972 365 GTB/4 Daytona achieving a mid-estimate £540,000; a right-hand drive 2009 430 Scuderia which had covered 13,600 miles in the hands of its three owners realised £168,750 (estimate £165,000 – 185,000); and a 1964 330 GT 2+2 Series I sold for £146,250 (estimate £140,000 – 170,000).
Silverstone Auctions reported a 63% sell-through rate and a combined total of £5.3 million for the two sales.
Tennants’ 13 May sale featured a 1990 Peugeot 205 1.9 GTi which made its lower estimate at £15,000. The eight-owner 109,000-mile car had been the subject of a restoration which included a colour change to white, interior re-trim and mechanical overhaul.
Star attraction at Brightwells on 16 May was a 1969 Jaguar E-Type Series II 4.2 Coupe – with bills in excess of £90,000 for a restoration in 2010 – which exceed pre-sale estimates, selling for £66,000. Another ex-California car finding a new home was a Euro-spec 60,800-mile 1971 Datsun 240Z which drew £24,200, against a £17,000 – 20,000 estimate.
All three Listers entered for Historics at Brooklands’ 19 May sale put in strong performances. A 1994 Storm – one of only three road-going examples built – went for £150,000 (estimate £145,000 – 165,000); while a 3,354-mile 1990 Jaguar XJS raised £88,480 (estimate £70,000 – 80,000) and a 1993 Jaguar XJ12 with close to £70,000 of Lister upgrades smashed its £30,000 – 40,000 estimate, selling for £64,960.
Despite a calendar clash with a certain Royal Wedding, Historics posted a 66% sell-through rate and generated £2.84 million in total.
