H&H’s Imperial War Museum sale on 20 March saw a two-owner 1936 Bentley 4½ Litre Vanden Plas Tourer smash its £150,000 – 200,000 estimate, selling for £444,375. Chassis RC41 – one of six examples built in 1936 – had been stored for some 30 years and was in need of extensive restoration.
Strong results were also recorded for a 44,000-mile 1964 Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider – the subject of a two year restoration in 2008 – with known history from new at £123,750 (estimate £80,000 – 100,000); a no-reserve 1974 BMW 3.0 CSi which had been in single-family ownership since 1976 achieved £70,315; and a right-hand drive 1972 Jaguar E-Type Series III V12 Roadster with a manual gearbox went for £60,187 (estimate £40,000 – 50,000).
Topping the 10-car Ian Grange Collection was a 1931 Cadillac Series 370 A V-12 Roadster, selling for £101,250. The collection included three Rolls-Royces; a 1965 Silver Cloud III Two-Door Saloon changed hands for £67,500, a 1969 Phantom VI Limousine drew £54,000, and a 45,000-mile 1984 Camargue raised £52,875.
A 1956 Bentley S1 Continental Coupe by Park Ward was the star performer at Historics’ Ascot sale, exceeding its £128,000 – 140,000 estimate with a winning bid of £147,850. Notable highlights among the Porsche sales included a well-presented 109,600-mile 1993 911 Turbo at £87,360 (estimate £58,000 – 68,000), and a 72,670-mile 1989 911 Turbo Cabriolet at £91,840 (estimate £65,000 – 75,000).
Brightwells’ three-owner 29,370-mile 1989 Ferrari 328 GTS crept above its lower estimate to record a sale at £57,720 on 6 March.
Other sports cars finding new homes included a 50,000-mile 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 – in storage for over 20 years – at £35,750 (estimate £35,000 – 40,000); a 1966 Jaguar E-Type Series I 4.2 2+2 Coupe owned from new until 2011 by Lord Boyne’s family made £33,000 (estimate £20,000 – 25,000); and a 72,000-mile 2006 Aston Martin V8 Vantage garnered £19,800 (estimate £21,000 – 23,000).
Brightwells posted a 76% sell-through rate, with more than 140 lots crossing the block.
Classic Car Auctions returned to the Classic Car and Restoration Show on 23-24 March with a bumper 188-car catalogue. A US-supplied left-hand drive 1970 Jaguar E-Type Series II 4.2 Roadster (estimate £50,000 – 60,000) shared the top honours with a 1969 Fiat Dino 2.4 Coupe (estimate £50,000 – 60,000), each taking £62,160.
The sale also featured a left-hand drive 1967 Mercedes-Benz 250 SL, imported into the UK in 2015, which realised £53,280 (estimate £50,000 – 60,000).
Above-estimate results included a 1977 Ford Escort RS2000 Factory X-Pack, originally used for publicity by Tricentrol Ford, which brought £39,960 (estimate £30,000 – 38,000); while a 1988 BMW M635 CSi with little history sold for £23,865 (estimate £13,000 – 16,000), and a time-warp 1985 Ford Escort 1.6i Cabriolet with just 2,965 miles from new was hammered away for £23,310 (estimate £10,000 – 12,000).
