Gooding and Company bagged the honours for the most expensive car sold during Amelia Island concours week; its barn find 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB Long Nose Alloy example making $2,530,000 (estimate $2,500,000 – 3,250,000).
There was plenty of success among the Porsches on offer, even though the star attraction – a 1974 911 RSR Turbo – failed to find a buyer on the day. A one-of-86 1993 Porsche 911 Turbo S Leichtbau set a new world record at $1,760,000 (estimate $1,600,000 – 2,000,000), as did a 1976 Porsche 934 at $1,320,000 (estimate $1,200,000 – 1,600,000); while the ex-Brun Motorsport 1990 Porsche 962 C took $1,595,000 (estimate $1,500,000 – 2,000,000).
A 64,600-km 1975 BMW 2002 turbo made an impressive $192,500 against its $130,000 – 160,000 estimate. Other strong performances included a 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet at $330,000 (estimate $300,000 – 350,000); a restored 1966 Shelby Cobra 427, which showed less than 30,000 miles, sold for $1,457,500 (estimate $1,100,000 – 1,400,000); and a barn find 1967 Shelby Cobra 427 brought $1,045,000 (estimate $1,000,000 – 1,300,000).
Goodings posted a sale total of $35.9 million and a sell-through rate of 95%.
Top sale at Bonhams was a one-owner 360-mile 2015 McLaren P1, one 375 examples produced, which achieved $1,710,000 (estimate $1,800,000 – 2,000,000).
Rounding off the top three; a 1959 Porsche 356 A 1600 Carrera GS fetched $632,000 (estimate $650,000 – 750,000) and a 1968 Ferrari 330 GTC went for $545,100 (estimate $550,000 – 750,000).
New world auction records included a 720-mile 1992 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.3 at $343,800 (estimate $275,000 – 325,000); a 7,400-mile 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Targa ‘Turbo Look’ at $169,120 (estimate $115,000 – 165,000); and a 1947 Delahaye 135MS Coupe by Pininfarina at $478,000 (estimate $400,000 – 500,000).
Bonhams fourth annual Amelia Island Auction realised a sale total of nearly $13.5 million, with an 87% sell-through rate.
RM Sotheby’s pre-sale star, a 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB, crept above its lower estimate, selling for $2,205,000.
Highlights among the 11 Porsche 964s entered from a single collection included a 6,825-km 1993 911 RS 3.8 at $1,655,000 (estimate $1,250,000 – 1,500,000); a 765-km 1993 911 RSR 3.8 at $1,270,000 (estimate $1,200,000 – 1,400,000); and a 1994 911 Turbo 3.6 at $324,000 (estimate $200,000 – 250,000).
Other top-tier sales included a concours award-winning 1930 Isotta Fraschini 8A S Boattail Cabriolet at $1,270,000 (estimate $1,200,000 – 1,400,000); a 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster at a mid-estimate $1,094,000; and a 1931 Marmon Sixteen Coupe, which was restored by the renowned Marmon expert Harry Sherry, sold for $1,050,000 (estimate $700,000 – 900,000).
RM generated a sale total of $27.7 million and an 86% sell-through rate.
