H&H Classics reported a sale total of £4.4 million from its 121-car Imperial War Museum auction on 29 March. Star attraction was the late Richard Colton 1964 Ferrari 330GT Nembo Spider which achieved £596,250, with sale proceeds benefitting the East Anglia Air Ambulance.
Strong results among the other Ferrari sales included; a 1958 250GT PF rebodied as a LWB California Spyder at £567,975 (estimate £600,000 – 800,000); a left-hand drive 1965 330 GT 2+2 at £196,875 (estimate £200,000 – 240,000); a 30,200-mile 1993 512 TR at a mid-estimate £146,250; and an ex-David Beckham 2001 360 Spider at £90,000 (estimate £85,000 – 95,000).
Other big-ticket sales included a 1925 Bentley 3 Litre Speed Tourer, in single-family ownership since 1958, which fetched £247,500 (estimate £230,000 – 270,000); a 2004 Aston Martin DB7 Zagato also made £247,500 (estimate £250,000 – 280,000); and a 1954 Lancia Aurelia B20 GT went for £123,750 (estimate £105,000 - 125,000).
Unsurprisingly the top lot at DVCA’s 2 March sale was a 1958 Jaguar XK 150 SE Fixed Head Coupe, finding a new home at £52,250 (estimate £55,000 – 65,000); while a recently restored 1960 Triumph TR3A sold for £27,500 (estimate £25,000 – 27,000) and a 1967 Jaguar S-Type 3.4 took £12,375 (estimate £12,000 – 14,000).
A 10,815-mile 1994 Aston Martin Virage Volante 6.3 ‘widebody’ headed the results at Historics at Brooklands sale on 4 March, selling for £160,000 (estimate £150,000 – 175,000).
Highlights among the 13 Jaguars on offer included a 1962 Jaguar E-Type Series I 3.8 Roadster which smashed its £90,000 – 110,000 estimate, achieving £145,600; a restored 1954 Jaguar XK120 SE Roadster – converted to right-hand drive – brought £128,000 (estimate £80,000 – 90,000); and a 22,600-mile 1966 Jaguar E-Type Series I Fixed Head Coupe made £125,000 (estimate £110,000 – 130,000).
However, the ‘result of the day’ went to an ex-Giancarlo Fisichella 1997 Jordan 197 F1, minus its engine and gearbox, which sold for £94,080 – over four times its lower estimate.
Notable highlights at Richard Edmonds sale on 4 March included a 1959 Jaguar XK 150 Fixed Head Coupe at £44,500 (estimate £50,000 – 60,000); a 1901 Milwaukee Steam Powered Racer at £33,000 (estimate £40,000 – 45,000); and a 1927 Lancia Lambda 7th Series at £25,000 (estimate £28,000 – 35,000).
Both Austin-Healeys changed hands at Brightwells’ 8 March sale; the 1956 100/4 BN2 selling for £48,000 (estimate £50,000 – 55,000) and a 1963 left-hand drive 3000 MkIIA making £29,000 (estimate £30,000 – 50,000).
Top seller at Mathewsons on 18 March was a part-restored 1966 Jaguar E-Type Series I 4.2 litre Coupe which fetched £29,500 (estimate £37,500 – 42,500).
Bonhams sold its 1961 Aston Martin DP214 Replica for £551,666 (estimate £600,000 – 700,000) at the Goodwood Members’ Meeting auction on 19 March.
Success among the pre-war entries included a 1924 Bentley 3 Litre Red Label Speed Model Tourer at £281,500 (estimate £270,000 – 320,000); a 1903 Clément-Bayard 12/16hp Rear-entrance Tonneau Car at £281,500 (estimate £250,000 – 300,000); and a 1913 Talbot 15hp Works Hill-Climber at £169,500 (estimate £140,000 – 180,000).
Other highlights included a 51-km 1997 Subaru Impreza 22B-STI Limited Edition Prototype which achieved a world-record breaking £113,500 (estimate £65,000 – 75,000); a 1966 Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 realised £203,100 (estimate £180,000 – 220,000); and a 2004 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren took £191,900 (estimate £130,000 – 160,000).
Competition cars finding new homes included a 1965 Lola T70 Spyder at £270,000 (estimate £200,000 – 300,000); an ex-Alan Mann Racing 1968 Ford Escort Twin Cam at £203,100 (estimate £200,000 – 250,000); and a 1957 Jaguar Mk I 3.4 – entered in the 1958 Monte Carlo Rally – which smashed its £70,000 – 100,000 estimate, going for £189,660.
Luxury motoring on offer at Tennants sale on 25 March included a 1965 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III which brought £25,000 (estimate £25,000 – 28,000); a 1972 Rolls-Royce Corniche Coupe achieved £21,000 (estimate £20,000 – 25,000); and a 2000 Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph hit its lower estimate, selling for £25,000.
