RM Sotheby’s took the honours for the highest price achieved at this year’s Amelia Island sales with its 1937 Bugatti Type 57S Cabriolet making $7,700,000 (estimate $8,500,000 – 10,000,000). RM’s two-day auction generated $70.9 million in total sales with 90% of all lots sold.
Strong results from the top-tier sales included an ex-Mike Tyson 5,694-mile 1995 Ferrari F50 at $2,640,000 (estimate $2,200,000 – 2,400,000); a rare Frua-bodied 1956 Maserati A6G/54 Coupe at $2,365,000 (estimate $1,600,000 – 2,000,000); a 1929 Stutz Model M at $1,705,000 (estimate $1,100,000 – 1,200,000); and a 1956 Bentley S1 Continental Drophead Coupe which blitzed its $700,000 – 900,000 estimate, selling for $1,683,000.
Elsewhere, a 1961 Jaguar E-Type Series I 3.8 Roadster fetched $412,500 (estimate $250,000 – 325,000); a 2002 Bentley Continental R Mulliner 'Wide Body' made $165,000 (estimate $80,000 – 100,000); a 1959 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud I Estate Car went for $583,000 (estimate $375,000 – 475,000); and a 1963 Meyers Manx brought $68,750 (estimate $30,000 – 40,000).
Star performer at Gooding and Company’s 10 March sale was 7,900-km 1998 Porsche 911 GT1 Strassenversion which sold for $5,665,000 – a new world record price for the model.
Competition cars changing hands included a 1989 Mazda 767B at $1,750,000 (estimate $1,800,000 – 2,400,000); the ex-Autohaus Max Moritz 1977 Porsche 934/5 at $1,375,000 (estimate $1,400,000 – 1,600,000); and the ex-Al Holbert 1981 Porsche 924 GTR at $220,000 (estimate $250,000 – 300,000).
Other notable sales included an ex-David Brown 1949 Aston Martin DB Mk II at $1,540,000 (estimate $1,500,000 – 2,250,000); a 2,250-km 1993 Porsche 911 Turbo S Leichtbau at $1,540,000 (estimate $1,300,000 – 1,600,000); and a 1967 Maserati Mistral 4000 Spider in need of restoration, which sold for $478,500 (estimate $350,000 – 450,000).
Overall Gooding reported total sales of $30.5 million with a sale rate of 78%.
Bonhams’ catalogue cover car – a 1955 Ferrari 250 Europa GT Alloy – headed the results from their 9 March auction, selling to a European collector for $2,227,500 (estimate $2,300,000 – 2,600,000).
Other highlights included a 1911 Pierce-Arrow Model 48 Touring selling for $550,000 (estimate $550,000 – 750,000); a 1989 Aston Martin V8 Volante at a mid-estimate $247,500; and a 1973 BMW 2002 Turbo at $112,200 (estimate $75,000 – 95,000).
