With a price tag of €701,948 (plus taxes) and a production run limited to just 77 examples, owners of Porsche’s new 935 are an exclusive bunch. The latest member to join the club came courtesy of RM Sotheby’s; chassis 2/77 hammered away for €1,320,000 at its timed online European sale on 11 June (estimate €1,275,000 – 1,375,000).
A 1939 Bugatti Type 57 Cabriolet that was exhibited on the manufacturer’s stand at the 1939 Geneva Salon made €770,000 against its pre-sale estimate of €750,000 – 850,000. Featuring one-off “special cabriolet” coachwork, chassis 57731 was initially retained as a factory demonstrator and used by their legendary works driver Jean-Pierre Wimille as his personal transport. Emerging after the war and re-registered in Rouen, the cabriolet notably joined the Quattroruote collection in 1964, where it remained until the vendor’s purchase in 2016.
Other big-ticket sales included an ex-Steve Beddor 1997 RUF CTR2 Sport that finished second in class at Pikes Peak Hill Climb in 1997 which sold for a mid-estimate €682,000; a one-of-30 left-hand drive 1967 Aston Martin DB6 Volante – with less than 800km travelled since it was restored by Aston Martin Works – went for €627,000 (estimate €550,000 – 650,000); and a 1981 Lancia Rally 037 Stradale with a recent engine rebuild and mechanical overhaul brought €451,000 (estimate €420,000 – 520,000).
The 94-car Petitjean Collection attracted strong interest, led by a 1958 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster which joined the collection in 1976 and changed hands for €759,000 (estimate €800,000 – 1,100,000). Other highlights included a 1968 Lamborghini Miura P400 at €715,000 (estimate €700,000 – 800,000); a 1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS at €693,000 (estimate €700,000 – 900,000); and a 13,800km 1979 Lamborghini Countach LP400 S at a mid-estimate €451,000.
With the ‘no reserve’ Petitjean Collection 100% sold, the auction’s remaining 111 lots achieved a well-deserved 83% sell-through rate – giving a combined 91% for the two-day sale and generating €19.2 million.
