Open-topped motoring ruled at Bonhams’ single-marque Aston Martin sale on 2 June. Heading the results was a 1965 DB5 4.2 Convertible which fetched £886,300, just shy of its upper estimate. A 1970 DB6 Mk2 Volante achieved £637,500 (estimate £700,000 – 900,000) and a 1958 DB2/4 Mk III Drophead Coupe comfortably exceeded its £300,000 – 350,000 pre-sale estimate, going for £393,500.
All four restoration-project cars on offer found new homes; a two-owner 1954 DB2/4 Mark II Drophead Coupe at a mid-estimate £225,500; a 1951 DB2 at £66,460 (estimate £40,000 – 60,000); a 1968 DBS at £37,833 (estimate £60,000 – 80,000); and a 1976 Lagonda Series 2 made its lower estimate, selling for £15,525.

Classic Car Auctions held its biggest one-day sale on 2 June, where 115 cars changed hands, generating a sale total of £1.53 million and a sell-through rate of 65%. Highlights included a 1967 Mercedes-Benz 230 SL with a five-speed manual gearbox which made its upper estimate at £50,050; an alloy-bodied 1960 Austin-Healey 3000 BT7 brought £49,500 (estimate £50,000 – 60,000); and a one-owner 1983 Ford Escort RS1600i which had covered just 8,000 miles from new proved there is still demand for low-mileage fast Fords, selling for £46,200 (estimate £30,000 – 35,000).
The star attractions also found buyers at Barons’ 5 June sale. A 1962 Jaguar E-Type Series I 3.8 Roadster – restored in 2002 – sold for £99,000 (estimate £75,000 – 95,000); while a 1964 Jaguar E-Type Series I 4.2 Fixed Head Coupe made £86,820 (estimate £65,000 – 90,000) and a 1975 Maserati Merak took £71,000 (estimate £65,000 – 85,000).
A 1960 Bentley S2 Continental Drophead Coupe realised £109,125 (estimate £80,000 – 100,000) at H&H’s Motor Sport Hall of Fame sale on 5 June. The four-owner car is one of 60 right-hand drive examples built with coachwork by Park Ward, and had been the subject of a number of modernisation upgrades during the current owner’s stewardship, which began in 2005.
Top performer at DVCA’s 7 June sale was a 1958 Jaguar XK 150 SE Fixed Head Coupe, fetching £47,000 (estimate £50,000 – 60,000). The right-hand drive XK had been comprehensively restored by the previous owner and was sold to the vendor by DVCA in March 2017 for £52,250.
Notable highlights among more than 240 lots going under the hammer at Anglia Car Auctions’ 16 June sale included a 1968 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL which soared above its £75,000 – 85,000 estimate, raising £117,600. A two-owner 1968 Triumph TR5, offered without a reserve, garnered £40,280; a three-owner 1977 Ford Granada 3.0 Ghia sold for £22,790 (estimate £16,000 – 20,000); and a 23,600-mile 1979 BMW 733i with one owner plus supplying dealer from new made £20,776 (estimate £12,500 – 15,000).
A 1935 Riley Amilcar Special was the top seller at Brightwells’ Bicester sale on 24 June. Actively campaigned in VSCC events since being built as a special between 1992 and 1993 by Richard Scaldwell, it blitzed its £60,000 – 80,000 estimate, bringing £132,160.
