Bonhams’ traditional June fixture at the Goodwood Festival of Speed saw a 1962 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster claim the honours for the top sale at £897,500 (estimate £850,000 – 950,000).
Pre-war success included a 1931 Bentley 8-Litre Sedanca de Ville at £779,900 (estimate £750,000 – 900,000); a 1914 Rolls-Royce 40/50hp Silver Ghost Open Tourer smashed its £300,000 – 400,000 estimate, selling for £550,300; a 1911 Mercedes Simplex 28/50hp 'Roi des Belges' Tourer took £359,900 (estimate £300,000 – 400,000); a 1908 Hotchkiss T 16/20 doubled its lower estimate, going for £163,900; and a 1930 Bugatti Type 46 made an impressive £281,500 (estimate £160,000 – 200,000).
Other top-tier machinery changing hands included a 1973 Porsche 911 2.7 Carrera RS Lightweight – one of 17 right-hand drive UK-supplied cars – at £830,300 (estimate £750,000 – 850,000); a 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 at £539,100 (estimate £500,000 – 600,000); a 1957 Aston Martin DB2/4 MkII – the prototype for the DB MkIII – at £337,500 (estimate £300,000 – 500,000); and a left-hand drive 1955 Porsche 356 ‘Pre-A’ Speedster at £303,900 (estimate £250,000 – 300,000).
Both Jaguar E-Types on offer at H&H on 2 June found new homes; a 1971 Series III V12 Coupe at £52,312 (estimate £40,000 – 50,000), and a part dismantled left-hand drive 1969 Series II 2+2 at £23,835 (estimate £14,000 – 18,000).
It was a busy month for H&H, with their second sale coming just four days later at Woodcote Park. Strong results included a 1966 Aston Martin DB6 Vantage at £249,700 (estimate £180,000 – 220,000); the 1996 test and development Subaru Impreza WRC 97, Chassis 001, at £230,625 (estimate £175,000 – 200,000); and a 1956 AC Aceca Bristol, the third example built, at £135,000 (estimate £100,000 – 120,000).
Other highlights included a 1953 Lancia Aurelia B20 GT Series III making £102,375 (estimate £90,000 – 110,000); a left-hand drive 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale achieved a mid-estimate £98,499; and a 1958 Jaguar Mk I 'Brian Lister Tribute' was well sold at £84,375 (estimate £65,000 – 75,000).
A four-owner 1968 Morris Mini Cooper headed the results at Mathewsons, selling for £15,780 (estimate £16,000 – 18,000); while a 1968 Jaguar 340 brought £14,388 (estimate £12,000 – 14,000) and a restored 1965 Morris Mini Pick-up fetched £14,170 (estimate £12,000 – 13,000).
DVCA’s stalled restoration project 1964 Jaguar E-Type Series I 3.8 Roadster blitzed its £50,000 – 55,000 pre-sale estimate on 8 June, selling for £80,300.
Open-top motoring dominated the results at Classic Car Auctions’ sale on 10 June, with a 39,000-mile 1971 Jaguar E-Type Series III V12 Roadster at £68,200 (estimate £70,000 – 80,000); a left-hand drive 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL at £62,700 (estimate £50,000 – 55,000); and a 1967 Austin-Healey 3000 Mk III BJ8, showing 34,000 miles, at £60,500 (estimate £65,000 – 75,000).
A 1971 Bristol 411 S2, stored since 1999, realised £28,600 (estimate £17,000 – 22,000) at Barons on 13 June, while both the restoration projects on offer also sold; a 1954 Jaguar XK 140 at £16,775 and a 1981 Morgan 4/4 at £11,660 (estimate £7,000 – 11,000).
Anglia Car Auctions’ pre-sale star attraction didn’t disappoint on 17 June; the 116,839-mile 1972 BMW 3.0 CSL soared above its £70,000 – 80,000 estimate, selling for £120,750.
Top seller at Richard Edmonds on 17 June was a restored 1931 Lagonda 2 Litre Supercharged Low Chassis Tourer, fetching a mid-estimate £105,500.
A 52,000-mile 1975 Range Rover topped the results at Charterhouse, selling for £25,000 (estimate £30,000 – 35,000); while a 1958 MGA Roadster which has covered just 3,000 miles since a comprehensive restoration was completed in 1991 took £20,000 (estimate £24,000 – 26,000).
Unsurprisingly the star at Brightwells ‘Modern Classics’ sale on 22 June was a 1995 Porsche 911 Turbo, sailing past its £60,000 – 70,000 estimate, selling for £83,600.
Two days later Brightwells held their Classic and Vintage sale at the Flywheel Festival, reporting a sale rate of over 75%. Notable highlights included a 1976 Ferrari 308 GTB Vetroresina, which comfortably exceeded its £70,000 – 90,000 pre-sale estimate, selling for £121,000; a 1965 Ford Mustang Shelby 350R Replica bringing £39,600 (estimate £39,000 – 44,000): and a restored 1973 BMW 2002 tii fetching £27,500 (estimate £17,500 – 19,500).
