Ferraris locked out the top three results at Bonhams’ Goodwood Festival of Speed sale on 9 July, led by the ex- Corrado Cupellini Dino 246/60 Formula 1 at £967,000 (estimate £900,000 – 1,300,000). The ex-Paul Vestey 1990 F40 with 17,789km made £883,000 (estimate £800,000 – 1,200,000), and a one-of-50 1958 250 GT Ellena, restored by DK Engineering from 2005-08, fetched £514,166 (estimate £700,000 – 900,000).
Elsewhere, a BMW 635 CSi that competed in the 1983 European Touring Car Championship in the hands of its first owner, Giuseppe Briozzo, was hammered away for £118,333 (estimate £140,000 – 180,000). A BMW Motorsport factory chassis and one of the first 635 CSi Group A racers built, it was restored by Geoff Steel Racing after the consignor’s purchase in 2016 and has since had just one outing at Donington Park in 2018 for the HTCC event.
Other highlights included a one-owner 7,400-km 1990 De Tomaso Pantera GT5-S, one of just 18 in right hand-drive, that went for £156,400 – including the private registration (estimate £150,000 – 250,000); a non-running 8,000-km 2007 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 Edition, not registered in the UK, generated £287,500 (estimate £180,000 – 240,000); and a 1962 Aston Martin DB4 Vantage Series IV with a replacement engine and single-family ownership since 1970 took £327,750 (estimate £300,000 – 400,000).

Bonhams were back in action a week later at Bicester, posting a 73% sell-through rate for its regular MPH sale, where a 1966 Aston Martin DB6 with a manual gearbox brought the highest price at £118,125 (estimate £130,000 – 160,000). In storage since the vendor’s purchase in 2007, the right-hand drive car required recommissioning and wasn’t UK registered.

H&H’s star attraction at its Buxton sale on 7 July didn’t disappoint on the day; the 71,900-mile 1976 Ferrari 308 GTB Vetroresina with one private owner between 1977 and 2017 changing hands for £108,000 (estimate £90,000 – 110,000).
All six Jaguar E-Types crossing the block found new homes, while other success included a handsome 1931 Lagonda 3-Litre Low Chassis Saloon at £73,125 (estimate £48,000 – 55,000) and a 2014 Realm Heritage C-Type at £67,500 (estimate £40,000 – 50,000).

The first Lewis Hamilton Grand Prix-winning car to be offered at public auction, his 2010 McLaren-Mercedes MP4-25, raised £4,730,000 at RM Sotheby’s British Grand Prix sale (estimate £3,600,000 – 5,000,000), with bidding taking place whilst McLaren test driver Rob Garofall demonstrated it in front of an estimated 140,000 race fans.

Silverstone Auctions’ Classic sale saw a 1997 Porsche 911 3.8 RSR Carrera Cup with less than 14,000km heading the results at £652,500 (estimate £580,000 – 650,000); while a two-owner 9,700-mile 1991 Audi Quattro – the final right-hand drive 20 valve built – set a new auction record at £163,125, blitzing its £75,000 – 95,000 guide.
New records were also established for an 11,000-mile UK-spec 2000 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI Tommi Makinen Edition, chassis 001, at £146,250; a 2002 Volkswagen Golf GTi 25th Anniversary with just 8 miles from new at £38,250; and an unregistered 1990 Mini Cooper RSP with 39 delivery miles at £31,500.
Silverstone Auctions have built up a solid reputation for fast Fords in recent years and this sale was no exception, with a trio of top-drawer unmolested cars making above estimate. The two-owner 30,000-mile 1987 Sierra RS Cosworth, well preserved in an unrestored condition, achieved £73,125 (estimate £55,000 – 65,000); a 1985 Escort RS Turbo Series 1 with 14,829 miles drew £63,000 (estimate £38,000 – 45,000); and a one-owner 8,156-mile 1983 Escort RS1600i sold for £46,125 (estimate £40,000 – 50,000).
