Both the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLs on offer at Artcurial’s Monaco sale found new homes; a 38,000-mile Gullwing optioned with an NSL camshaft and Rudge knock-off wheels sold for €1,416,000 – the top result of the day (estimate €1,200,000 – 1,400,000), while the recently-restored Roadster fetched €858,240 (estimate €800,000 – 1,000,000).
A 1939 Bugatti Type 57 Cabriolet from the Volante Collection known as one of the ‘Bordeaux Orphans’ took €500,640 (estimate €600,000 – 800,000). The Orphans were five unsold but fully assembled chassis that were moved to Bugatti’s new factory in Bordeaux just prior to the outbreak of war. During the 1940s this car, chassis ‘57780’/engine 546, was fitted with the unique 4-seater cabriolet body from chassis 57757/52C– exhibited on Vanvooren’s stand at the 1938 Paris Motor Show – and after joining the consignor’s collection in 2014 it was treated to a two-year award-winning restoration by René Grosse.
Other highlights included a three-owner 1966 De Tomaso Vallelunga at €321,840 (estimate €275,000 – 350,000); a 1972 Alfa Romeo Montreal with little use since a €40,000 restoration comfortably exceeded its €45,000 – 65,000 guide, drawing €73,904; and a 30,660-km 1990 Ferrari F40 made a mid-estimate €959,560.

Notably, the collection’s 1970 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona went for €434,500 (estimate €400,000 – 500,000), and the 1977 Le Mans class-winning Inaltera LM GTP brought €374,000 (estimate €450,000 – 550,000).
Elsewhere, an ex-Markku Alén Lancia Delta S4 that finished 2nd in the 1985 Lombard RAC Rally attracted a winning bid of €770,000 (estimate €875,000 – 1,100,000); a one-owner 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 S Roadster with fewer than 15,000km from new achieved €605,000 (estimate €650,000 – 750,000); and a two-owner 27,000-km 1989 Aston Martin V8 Vantage Volante 'X-Pack' sold for €230,000 (estimate €250,000 – 300,000).
RM Sotheby’s reported bidders from 41 countries and total sales of €8.23 million.
