Silverstone Auctions reported total sales of £5.5 million from its three day Silverstone Classic auction, with a sell-through rate of 71%. Star performer was the ex-Elton John 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona which sold for a mid-estimate £551,250.
Strong bidding for the comprehensively restored 1973 BMW 3.0 CSL saw its pre-sale estimate of £70,000 – 85,000 smashed, recording a sale at £137,250. Other BMWs changing hands included a Taiga Green 1972 3.0 CSL at £78,750 (estimate £70,000 – 85,000) and two cars from Jay Kay’s collection; a 150,000-mile 1986 M5 at £29,810 (estimate £30,000 – 35,000); and a 1975 2002 turbo at £70,880 (estimate £65,000 – 75,000).
Low mileage machinery also received plenty of interest during the weekend. A 14,680-mile 1987 Ford Capri 280 Brooklands made £20,000 more than its lower estimate, selling for £55,125; a 4,500-mile 1991 Vauxhall Lotus Carlton just pipped its higher estimate, taking £72,000; a 1988 Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9 with only 5,726 miles from new fetched £38,480 (estimate £28,000 – 32,000); and an 11,000-mile 1987 Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 achieved £114,750 (estimate £90,000 – 100,000).
Topping the results at Silverstone’s Race Car sale was the ex-Juha Kankkunen 1990 Lancia Delta HF Integrale Evolution Works Group A Rally Car, which soared past its £120,000 – 150,000 estimate, selling for £225,000.
Mathewsons’ delightful 1960 BMW Isetta trailer combo made £19,620 at its 8 July sale (estimate £17,500 – 19,500); while a 1978 Panther J72 went for £25,000 (estimate £30,000 – 35,000) and a 1969 Alfa Romeo 1750 GT Veloce brought £20,165 (estimate £18,000 – 20,000).
Over 120 cars went across the block at Historics at Brooklands 8 July sale, headed by a 1989 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary which sold for £200,000 (estimate £190,000 – 240,000).
Other notable success included a 1971 Aston Martin DBS V8 at £75,040 (estimate £70,000 – 90,000); a 1934 Bentley 3½ Litre Open Tourer at £131,600 (estimate £100,000 – 140,000); an 80,000-mile 1996 BMW 850 CSi at £38,080 (estimate £40,000 – 50,000); a 1965 Jaguar E-Type Series I 4.2 Fixedhead Coupe at £106,400 (estimate £78,000 – 95,000); and a left-hand drive 1968 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL at a mid-estimate £92,960.
Brightwells posted a sell-through rate of 70% and a sale total just short of £990,000 from its 12 July Classic and Vintage auction. Top seller on the day was a left-hand drive 1970 Jaguar E-Type Series II 4.2 Coupe which realised £59,950 (estimate £60,000 – 65,000).
Triumphs occupied the top two spots at Charterhouse on 16 July; a 1966 TR4A achieved its lower estimate, selling for £25,000 and a 1959 TR3A went for £23,500 (estimate £20,000 – 22,000).
A 1964 Jensen C-V8 just topped its higher estimate, selling for £48,950 at Barons 18 July sale. Other strong results included a 1970 Jaguar E-Type Series II 4.2 Coupe – converted to right-hand drive – at £51,700 (estimate £30,000 – 45,000); a 1966 Ford Mustang Fastback at £23,650 (estimate £19,000 – 22,000); and a JPS-liveried 1975 Ford Capri which had covered just 1,300 miles since being restored in 2009 took £20,900 (estimate £15,000 – 20,000).
A 1929 Bugatti Type 44 headed the results at H&H on 26 July, finding a new home at £196,875 (estimate £200,000 – 240,000).
Other highlights included a left-hand drive 1973 Alfa Romeo Montreal at £51,000 (estimate £55,000 – 60,000); a 2001 Daimler V8 4.0 Majestic LWB – once used by HM The Queen – at £42,750 (estimate £45,000 – 55,000); and a 1987 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL with only 24,400 miles from new sold for £39,656 (estimate £25,000 – 35,000).
SWVA achieved an impressive 96% sell-through rate from the 78 lots on offer at its 28 July auction. Stand out performances included a 1972 Aston Martin DBS – one of the last six-cylinder cars – fetching a high-estimate £60,000; a 28,400-mile 1987 Ford Capri 280 Brooklands at £32,000 (estimate £26,000 – 27,500); and a 1975 BMW 2002 tii – only recently emerging from 10 years in storage – blitzed its £3,000 – 4,000 estimate, taking £17,500.
