A 1929 Duesenberg Model J ‘Disappearing Top’ Convertible Coupe took the honours for the top price achieved at auction in July at RM Sotheby’s Motor City sale in Plymouth, Michigan, changing hands for $1,540,000 (estimate $1,250,000 – 1,650,000). RM reported a sale total in excess of $6.4 million, with a sale rate of 80%.

Other significant sales included a 300-mile 2006 Saleen S7 at $632,500 (estimate $650,000 – 725,000); a 1933 Packard Twelve Coupe Roadster at $365,000 (estimate $400,000 – 475,000); and a 1934 Pierce-Arrow Silver Arrow Eight at $242,000 ($225,000 – 275,000).
Although American classics dominated the inventory, highlights among the European cars on offer included a 1960 Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Cabriolet which went for $165,000 (estimate $160,000 – 220,000); a 1965 Jaguar E-Type Series I 4.2 Roadster took $159,500 (estimate $140,000 – 180,000); a 1957 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL achieved $154,000 (estimate $140,000 – 180,000); and a 1955 Jaguar XK 140 MC Drophead Coupe far exceeded estimates, fetching $187,000 (estimate $100,000 – 140,000).
