RM Sotheby’s 21st annual Motor City sale on July 25 generated $7.4 million and a sale rate of 79%. With a solid inventory of American classics, star of the auction was the 1935 Duesenberg Model SJ Dual-Cowl Phaeton, originally owned by Duesenberg Motors President Lucius B. Manning, which sold for $852,500 (estimate $1,100,000 – 850,000). The 1933 Packard Twelve Individual Custom Sport Phaeton far exceeded pre-sale expectations fetching $583,000 (estimate $400,000 – 450,000), as did the award-winning 1934 Auburn Twelve Salon Speedster which realised $506,000 ($375,000 – 450,000).
A 2005 Ford GT, showing fewer than 370 miles, headed the modern collectibles and made $319,000 (estimate $300,000 – 350,000). Other notable highlights included a 1989 Porsche 911 Turbo, showing 51,293km, selling for $176,000 (estimate $100,000 – 140,000); a 1988 Lamborghini LM002 took $192,500 (estimate $140,000 – 180,000); and a 2001 BMW Z8 also changed hands for $192,500 (estimate $175,000 – 225,000).
