With neither of the Jaguar D-Types finding new homes at this year’s Scottsdale sales the ex-Battista Pininfarina 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB Speciale bagged the top spot for Gooding and Company, selling for a world record $8,085,000 (estimate $8,000,000 – 10,000,000).
A 1954 Ferrari 500 Mondial also set a new world record for the model at $4,455,000 (estimate $5,000,000 – 5,750,000). Chassis 0434 MD was originally sold through Garage Francorchamps to the racing driver Herman Roosdorp, and is one of only 14 examples bodied by Pinin Farina.
Other top-tier sales included the Rallye des Alpes-winning 1931 Bugatti Type 55 Roadster at $4,070,000 (estimate $4,000,000 – 5,000,000); a 1967 Ferrari 330 GTS which was sold to original owner’s family for $2,530,000 – to the delight of the assembled crowd (estimate $2,000,000 – 2,400,000); and a one-off 1963 Iso Grifo A3/L Prototype, exhibited at the 1963 Torino Motor Show and the 1964 New York Auto Show, which smashed its $1,100,000 – 1,500,000 estimate, achieving a new world record at $1,760,000.
Gooding posted total sales of $49.21 million with an 85% sell-through rate; 12 cars made over $1 million and 20 new world records were set.
RM Sotheby’s star performer at its two-day sale was a four-owner 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 'Semi-Competition' which blitzed its $2,000,000 – 2,400,000 estimate, fetching $2,947,500.
Strong results also included the ex-Preston Tucker 1948 Tucker Model 48 at $1,792,500 (estimate $1,250,000 – 1,500,000); a 1956 Austin-Healey 100M 'Le Mans' – restored in 2016 – at $218,400 (estimate $160,000 – 200,000); a 1935 Auburn Eight Supercharged Speedster – one of around 150 examples built – at $769,500 (estimate $500,000 – 650,000); and a recently restored 1974 BMW 2002 turbo at $145,600 (estimate $110,000 – 140,000).
RM Sotheby’s generated a sale total of $36.5 million and an 88% sell-through rate.
An ex-Works 1958 Porsche 550A Spyder topped the results at Bonhams Scottsdale sale on 18 January, bringing $5,170,000 (estimate $4,500,000 – 5,000,000).
Among the Ferraris finding new homes; a 1972 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider made a mid-estimate $2,640,000; a 2,428-mile 1991 F40 took $1,512,500 (estimate $1,400,000 – 1,700,000); and a ‘Chairs and Flares’ 1974 Dino 246 GTS with less than 27,800 miles from new went for $484,000 (estimate $450,000 – 550,000).
Elsewhere, a 1930 Bentley Speed Six 'Le Mans Replica' Tourer sold for $1,457,500 (estimate $750,000 – 1,000,000); while Carroll Shelby's own 1966 Shelby GT350H fetched $253,000 (estimate $150,000 – 200,000) and his 645-mile 2006 Ford GT brought $489,500 (estimate $300,000 – 350,000).
