Bonhams hammered away the ex-Bill Turnbull 1937 Bugatti Type 57S for £4,047,000 at its ‘Legends of the Road’ sale, heading the UK results (estimate £5,000,000 – 7,000,000), with a part restored 1960 Aston Martin DB4GT also finding a new home at £1,975,000, comfortably exceeding its £1,400,000 – 1,800,000 guide.

February proved to be a popular month for Aston Martin DB4GTs, with Gooding & Company and the French house Artcurial also selling their left-hand drive examples. Gooding’s well-restored car was part of a 9-lot timed online auction, fetching £2,750,000 against its £2,000,000 – 2,500,000 pre-sale estimate. Other highlights in the collection which was 100% sold included a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 at a mid-estimate £1,870,000, and an alloy-block 1963 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster at £935,000 (estimate £900,000 – 1,200,000).

Mathewsons set a new auction record for a Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth when its 1991 example drew £60,162. The one-owner car with just 12,700 miles required recommissioning and cosmetics having been taken off the road and stored since 1994.

Brightwells’ pre-sale star didn’t disappoint on the day, the 1968 Triumph TR5 with a Surrey Top and three-owners in the last 28 years made a top-estimate £35,000, helping towards an impressive 88% sell-through rate.
Among the yougtimers, a 56,672-mile 2002 Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG with just 1,600 miles use since 2013 changed hands for £15,786 (estimate £13,000 – 15,000) and a1997 BMW Z3M Roadster with 96,852 miles took £11,760 (estimate £11,000 – 14,000); while a three-owner 1995 BMW 840 Ci that had covered less than 29,000 miles since receiving a new block and pistons under warranty in 2002 sold for £10,696 (estimate £5,000 – 7,000).

A one-owner 25,000-mile 1974 Jensen Interceptor topped the results at Anglia Car Auctions first sale of the year, going for £73,440 (estimate £68,000 – 74,000). Strong performers also included a 300hp 1986 Ford Sierra RS Cosworth at £59,400 (estimate £48,000 – 55,000), a ‘no-reserve’ 1981 Ford Fiesta Supersport 1.3 showing 81,315 miles at £24,840, and a nut-and-bolt restored 1973 Bond Bug 700 ES at a record £29,160.
