Silverstone Auctions’ 1958 Porsche 356 A Speedster led the results at their Race Retro sale on 23 February, changing hands for £292,500 (estimate £240,000 – 280,000). The car resided in the US until purchased by the consignor at Goodings’ Pebble Beach auction in 2015, after which it was imported into the UK and converted to right-hand drive.
A 51,786-mile 1972 Ferrari Dino 246 GT presented in striking shade of Azzuro Dino fetched £270,000 (estimate £240,000 – 280,000); while other Ferraris finding new homes included a manual gearbox 2005 F430, with 19,000 miles from new, at £115,875 (estimate £100,000 – 120,000, and a 4,985-mile right-hand drive 1999 F355 GTB at mid-estimate £90,000.
One of the 34 UK-market right-hand drive 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 MFIs made £131,000 (estimate £125,000 – 160,000). The coupe was restored by renowned marque specialists Francis Tuthill and came complete with its optional ‘Duck Tail’ spoiler in addition to the fitted ‘Whale Tail’.
Other highlights included a 6,000-mile 2012 McLaren MP4-12C which formed part of a private collection in Hong Kong until returning to the UK in 2018 – selling for £78,750 (estimate £75,000 – 85,000); a class-winning 1964 Elva Mk7 S soared past its £55,000 – 65,000 guide, taking £76,500; and a one-owner 53,000-mile 1979 Volkswagen Golf GTi Mk1 which was recently recommissioned following some 20 years in storage achieved £27,225 – £10,000 above its lower estimate.
Overall, Silverstone Auctions reported a 69% sell-through rate and a sale total of £2.8 million.
H&H’s inaugural online auction saw George Barris’ wild SnakePit – built in 1975 and powered by 6 Cobra-Ford 351 V8 engines – make £50,625. At the other end of the horsepower spectrum, a 1978 Ford Fiesta 950 with just 141 miles from new which was exhibited at The Science Museum in London for the majority of its life went for £14,625 (estimate £6,500 – 8,500).
A 1951 Jaguar Mk V that spent its first 50 years in Australia was the star attraction at Barons’ Sandown Park sale, going for £30,360 (estimate £23,000 – 28,000). The top three results were rounded off with a 1964 Morris Mini Cooper – restored over a 10 year period – at £20,130 (estimate £17,000 – 21,000), and a 1992 Ginetta G33 N at a mid-estimate £18,260.
Barons’ line-up also featured a one-owner 1991 Peugeot 309 GTi in time-warp condition, having only travelled 131 miles since new, which comfortably eclipsed its pre-sale estimate of £8,000 – 11,000, selling for £14,520.
