An ex-Elton John 1997 Aston Martin V8 Vantage V550 which had covered just 8,663 miles from new was the top performer at Silverstone Auctions’ Race Retro sale on 23-24 February, making £219,375 (estimate £190,000 – 240,000); while Rowan Atkinson’s 1993 Mercedes-Benz 500E and his 1989 Lancia Thema 8.32 also found new homes at £71,300 and £29,813 respectively.
Other strong results included the ex-Bruce Willis/Jay Kay 1969 Dodge Charger ‘Bullitt’ spec which sold for £94,500, close to double its lower estimate; a 1969 Aston Martin DBS – refurbished in 2014 – fetched £99,000 (estimate £70,000 – 80,000); a 1972 BMW 3.0 CSL at a mid-estimate £106,875; and a 2012 Morgan 3-wheeler – one of the 122 Superdry Editions – achieved £32,625 (estimate £20,000 – 25,000).
Silverstone’s success with ‘fast Fords’ continued; an 8,876-mile 1987 RS200 selling at £157,500 (estimate £120,000 – 150,000); a three-owner 40,044-mile 1980 RS2000 bringing £50,625 (estimate £33,000 – 38,000); and a 29,000-mile 1996 Escort RS Cosworth made £58,500 (estimate £45,000 – 50,000).
Among the competition cars on offer; the 1990 BTCC Championship-winning Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 sold for £182,250 (estimate £175,000 – 220,000); a 1960 Cooper Monaco T57 MKII realised £163,130 (estimate £160,000 – 190,000); and a 1970 Lola T210 with race success in period and known history from new took £146,250 (estimate £140,000 – 170,000).
Silverstone reported a 63% sell-through rate for Friday’s Competition Car Sale and a 70% rate for the following day’s Classic Car Sale, with a combined total of £3.7 million.
A three-owner 73,000-mile 1988 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL wound up topping the results sheets at Brightwells’ Modern Classics sale on 1 February, fetching £20,350 (estimate £17,000 – 19,000).
1920’s motoring stole the show at Mathewsons’ 10 February sale; a 1923 Crossley 19-6 Landaulette, believed to be the last known example in existence, went for £54,660 (estimate £55,000 – 65,000), and a 1926 Austin 20-4 Landaulette brought a mid-estimate £42,000.
Highlights among the sales a Charterhouse on 11 February included a restored 1951 Jaguar XK 120 Roadster at £68,000 (estimate £80,000 – 90,000); a 1962 Lotus Super Seven S2 Cosworth at £15,000 (estimate £25,000 – 28,000); and a 1947 Morgan 4/4 restoration project which took £8,000 (estimate £9,000 – 10,000).
A restored 1973 BMW 3.0 CSA just pipped its £25,000 – 30,000 pre-sale estimate at Morris Leslie on 17 February, going for £31,164. Other German machinery changing hands included a four-owner 1973 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 2.8 at £16,430 (estimate £16,000 – 18,000); a 52,217-mile 2002 Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG at £14,840 (estimate £13,000 – 15,000); and a 1989 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 which sailed past its £8,000 – 10,000 estimate, selling for £13,038.
Barons’ 1991 TVR 450 SEAC Convertible drew £29,150 at its Classic Winter Warmer auction on 27 February, just shy of the £30,000 pre-sale high estimate. The car was the last of the SEACs to be built and featured a modified 4.6-litre engine.
