Silverstone Auctions returned to the Race Retro show for its three-day Competition and Classic Car sale, with over 130 lots crossing the block. A 1961 Emeryson Formula 1 Climax FPF – believed to be the sole surviving example – headed the results, selling for £174,380 (estimate £150,000 – 180,000).
Other highlights among the competition cars included a 1963 Jaguar E-Type Roadster Zealia Lightweight Recreation which smashed its £75,000 – 85,000 estimate, making £105,750; a 1973 BMW 3.0 CSL fetched £105,750 (estimate £100,000 - 125,000); an ex-Alan Mann Racing Ford Capri Group 1 – with recent Gerry Marshall Trophy success – sold for £88,880 (estimate £80,000 – 90,000); and the ex-Martin Thomas 1968 Chevrolet Camaro achieved £65,250 (estimate £65,000 – 75,000).
A recently restored 34,935-mile 1974 Ferrari Dino 246 GT soared past its £300,000 – 350,000 pre-sale estimate, changing hands for £439,875; while the ex-Jenson Button 2005 Ford GT made £264,375 (estimate £250,000 – 300,000); and a 2010 Lamborghini Murciélago LP 670-4 SV took £249,750 (estimate £240,000 – 280,000).
Other notable success included a comprehensively restored 1960 Jaguar XK 150 3.8 SE Drophead Coupe which brought £132,750 – over double its lower estimate; a 1991 BMW Alpina B12 5.0 Coupe – one of just five right-hand drive examples built – sold for £64,688 (estimate £45,000 – 55,000); and a two-owner left-hand drive 1969 Porsche 911 T realised £81,000 (estimate £55,000 – 65,000).
Top lot at Mathewsons’ 11 February sale was a 1965 Jaguar Mk II, imported from South Africa in 2002, which took £21,200 (estimate £22,500 – 24,500).
A 1953 Jaguar XK 120 Roadster – in single-family ownership since 1959 – blitzed its £60,000 – 65,000 estimate at Charterhouse on 12 February, selling for £73,000.
Morris Leslie’s 18 February sale saw a right-hand drive 1972 Aston Martin DBS take £64,130 (estimate £50,000 – 60,000); a two-owner 1987 Ford Sierra RS Cosworth sold for £42,400 (estimate £35,000 – 40,000); and a 1965 Land Rover Series I 86” just pipped its top estimate, achieving £16,430.
Star performer at H & H’s Donington Park auction on 23 February was a 1963 Jaguar E-Type Series I 3.8 Roadster, outstripping expectations and finding a new home at £75,040 (estimate £50,000 – 60,000); while a 1969 Lotus Elan S4 Drophead Coupe went for £22,400 (estimate £25,000 – 30,000); and a 1987 Ford Capri 280 Brooklands fetched £21,840 (estimate £22,000 – 26,000).
A 1967 Fiat Dino Spider, imported from Italy in 1975, sold for £83,600 at Barons on 28 February (estimate £45,000 – 60,000). Other sale highlights included a 1956 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL project – dry-stored for some 40 years – at £47,300 (estimate £37,000 – 45,000); a 1937 MG TA at mid-estimate £26,950; and a 1992 Porsche 968 Cabriolet at £15,950 (estimate £15,000 – 18,000).
