Bonhams’ unrestored 1961 Aston Martin DB4GT 'Lightweight' made £2,367,000 at its Bond Street auction on 7 December (estimate £2,000,000 – 3,000,000), the pre-sale star heading the 13 cars that changed hands.
Other notable results included the ex- Alastair Pugh 1939 Frazer Nash BMW 328 at £644,583 (estimate £650,000 – 850,000); a repainted and re-trimmed 1988 Aston Martin V8 Vantage X-Pack at a mid-estimate £324,300; and a 1965 Jaguar Mk II 3.8 'Coombs Evocation' with £30,000 in bills over the last five years which drew £51,750 (estimate £45,000 – 55,000).
Among the modern machinery on offer, a 2,700-mile 2001 Ferrari 550 GTZ Barchetta – the only right-hand drive version of the three examples built – fetched £575,000 (estimate £500,000 – 700,000); a one-owner 518-mile 2017 Ferrari F12 Berlinetta 70th Anniversary went for £339,250 (estimate £300,000 – 400,000); and a left-hand drive 2013 Alfa Romeo 8C Spider with two owners and 7,675 miles from new brought £197,800 (estimate £175,000 – 200,000).
Classic Car Auctions successfully hammered away all three Jaguar E-Types at its 7 December sale. Both of the restored 3.8-litre Series 1s made above estimates, with the 1962 Roadster taking £80,140 (estimate £70,000 – 80,000), and the 1964 Fixed Head Coupe raising £74,370 (estimate £60,000 – 70,000); while a left-hand drive 1967 Series 1.5 4.2 Fixed Head Coupe in need of a total restoration sold for £14,652 (estimate £15,000 – 18,000).
A 1964 Morris Mini Cooper S that was the subject of a bare metal restoration took £41,070 (estimate £36,000 – 40,000), and spirited bidding saw a 1971 Datsun 240Z, entered in the 2012 London to Cape Town Rally, sell for £37,185 (estimate £16,000 – 20,000).
The sale also featured a 1974 BMW 3.0 CS which emerged from a four-year nut-and-bolt restoration in 2016, during which time it was fitted with a 3.5-litre engine from a 635 CSi, Recaro seats and Alpina alloys. Finished in its original shade of Inka Orange, the E9 coupe pipped its £20,000 – 25,000 estimate, going for £25,530.
Classic Car Auctions reported a 70% sell-through rate and a sale total of £1.26 million.
Land Rover celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2018 with the Works V8, a limited run of up to 150 Defenders rebuilt by Jaguar Land Rover Classic using a 399bhp 5.0 litre petrol V8. The ultimate incarnation of the Defender crossed the block at Barons’ 10 December sale, coming from a deceased estate with just 57 miles on the clock it commanded a winning bid of £129,800 (estimate £115,000 – 150,000).
