A 1958 BMW 507 was the stand-out result at Bonhams’ 1 December Bond Street sale, comfortably exceeding its £2,100,000 – 2,200,000 estimate and finding a new home at £2,367,000. One of just 252 examples produced, chassis 70100 was owned by the car’s designer Count Albrecht Graf von Goertz from 1971 until 1985, during which time it was fitted with a replacement engine.
The 1964 Aston Martin DB5 on offer also enjoyed strong demand, selling for £743,000 – more than £100,000 above its lower estimate. Presented in its original scheme of Goodwood Green over beige trim, the car remained with its first owner for some 30 years and more recently received a repaint and mechanical overhaul, which included an engine rebuild to 4.2-litre spec.
Other success included a one-of-60 right-hand drive 2011 Ferrari 599 GTO with 3,600 miles from new at £508,333 (estimate £500,000 – 600,000) and a 1924 Vauxhall 30/98hp OE Velox Tourer – first owned by Hari Singh, the last ruling Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir – which changed hands for £437,000 (estimate £330,000 – 390,000).
Bonhams ended its auction year with the traditional season-closer at London’s Olympia on 3 December. The top three sales were headed by a 1953 Aston Martin DB2 Vantage 'X' Series which fetched £201,250 (estimate £130,000 – 160,000); while a 1939 Bentley 4¼ Litre Tourer – owned by the consignor since 1970 – made £163,300 (estimate £120,000 – 150,000) and a 1937 example brought £138,000 (estimate £120,000 – 150,000).
Star attraction at Classic Car Auctions on 1 December was a right-hand drive 1969 Alfa Romeo Spider 1750 which smashed its £24,000 – 28,000 pre-sale estimate, going for £47,300.
The sale also featured a 1982 Porsche 911 SC Targa – the subject of a £30,000 restoration – which raised £37,180 (estimate £30,000 – 35,000); a 1969 Jensen Interceptor attracted a winning bid of £36,300 (estimate £36,000 – 40,000); and a three-owner 1972 Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 took £33,880 (estimate £20,000 – 25,000).
Classic Car Auctions reported an 80% sell-through rate, with sales exceeding £1.6 million.
