A 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO topped the results at Bonhams on 2 December, selling for £1,883,333 (estimate £2,000,000 – 2,500,000). The car was one of the original 20 examples supplied to the UK out of a total production of some 278, and had covered 22,700km from new.
Highlight among the eight Aston Martins on offer was the ex- Paul McCartney DB5 which made a mid-estimate £1,345,500, while the ex-Brian Epstein/Ringo Starr 1966 Mini Cooper S Radford was snapped up by former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell for £102,300 (estimate £90,000 – 120,000).
Other Astons finding new homes included a 1965 DB5 Vantage at £830,300 (estimate £600,000 – 800,000) and an 8,889-mile 2004 DB7 Zagato at £359,900 (estimate £320,000 – 360,000).
A Ford RS200 Evolution smashed its £180,000 – 240,000 estimate, selling for £281,500. One of just 24 made, the car was originally supplied to Mikal Nordstrom for hill climbs and rally-cross. After retiring from competition the car was returned to road specification, albeit with an engine that currently produces in excess of 600bhp.
Classic Car Auctions final sale of 2017 saw a sell-through rate of 80% with a sale total of £1.8 million. Notable lots included a 1984 Opel Manta 400 which fetched £50,600 (estimate £40,000 – 50,000) and a brace of Porsche 911 Supersports; a 1989 Coupe at £71,500 (estimate £60,000 – 70,000) and a 68,900-mile 1985 Targa at £68,750 (estimate £68,000 – 74,000).
Bonhams continued its run of success with Aston Martin DB5s in December when a 1964 example which had been in the vendor’s family for nearly 50 years achieved £462,940 at its Olympia sale on 6 December (estimate £350,000 – 450,000). Meanwhile a 1929 Invicta 4½ Litre Tourer, in single family ownership from new, went for £165,020 (estimate £100,000 – 130,000) and a right-hand drive 1970 Monteverdi 375L soared above its £25,000 – 30,000 estimate, taking £57,500.
Star performer at Barons’ 12 December sale was a 1964 Jaguar Mk II 3.8 which sold for £41,800 – close to double its estimate. The one-owner car came with a wealth of documents and had recently been recommissioned following 27 years in storage.
