Star of the show at Oldtimer Galerie’s Gstaad auction on 29 December was a 1958 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster, complete with an original luggage set and Mercedes-Benz Classic certificate, which sold for CHF1,120,000 (estimate CHF1,100,000 – 1,200,000).
However, slightly less exotic machinery grabbed the headlines when a 1981 Volvo 262 C, first owned by David Bowie, crossed the block. Used by the legendary musician until 1998 during his stays in Switzerland, the car quickly passed its pre-sale estimate of CHF65,000 – 75,000, finally changing hands for an incredible CHF212,800 (€183,000).
Other notable highlights included a Maserati 3500 GT, restored some ten years ago, which made CHF257,600 (estimate CHF230,000 – 245,000); a 1973 Lamborghini Espada at CHF156,800 (estimate CHF125,000 – 145,000); and a 79,500km 1988 Audi Quattro Turbo, number 150/200 of the ‘Edition Spéciales’ built for Swiss market, finding a new home at CHF61,600 (estimate CHF45,000 – 50,000).
Nuremberg’s Retro Classics played host to Classicbid’s 9 December sale where the top result was a 92,000km 1986 Porsche 911 Turbo which brought €85,000 (estimate €95,000 – 125,000). Delivered new to the US, the car was imported back to Germany in 2007 where it received a full restoration.
The design-concept 2010 Citroën Tubik headed the results at Leclere’s Citroën Heritage sale on 10 December, realising €36,960 (estimate €20,000 – 30,000).
All 65 vehicles were successfully sold on the day, most for considerably more than their conservative estimates. A restoration project 1953 Citroën Traction Avant 11 achieved double its upper estimate, selling for €14,000; a 5,440km 2000 Citroën XM Exclusive fetched €33,600 (estimate €4,000 – 6,000); and two Citroën Méharis smashed their €2,000 – 4,000 estimates, taking €20,160 and €24,640 apiece.
