December 2015 - European auction highlights
19 January, 2016
With the star cars failing to sell at Auctionata’s ‘Mercedes-Benz Only’ auction in Berlin, the top lot honours went to a 1970 280 SE Coupe which made €84,000 against a pre-sale estimate of €85,000 – 95,000. Other sales highlights included a 1969 280 SL making €72,800 (estimate €70,000 – 80,000) and an unusual 1939 170 V Roadster that started life as a convertible B fetched €35,840 (estimate €40,000 – 50,000). The car was delivered to the army's high command in Berlin in May 1939, and according to the previous owner, it went to England after the war and at some point received a new body from Hooper (London), with the body’s centre section and the seats being made of wickerwork.
Auctionata followed their Mercedes-Benz sale with a 25-lot ‘Porsche Only’ sale in Hamburg on 12 December. A 1965 911 proved to be the highlight of the show, selling for €268,800 against a pre-sale estimate of €280,000 – 320,000. The car was described as being in an original unrestored condition, apart from a repaint many years ago, and came from the estate of John “Otto“ Williamson, who ran a Porsche garage in Venice, California.
Elsewhere, an unrestored 1974 911 2.7 made €224,000 (estimate €240,000 – 260,000) and a 69,233-km 1997 911 Turbo, resplendent in its special order finish of ‘Yellow L998’, sold for €173,600 (estimate €190,000 – 210,000).
