August’s Monterey sales provided further evidence of the bullish sentiment in the US market, with a record overall total – trumping the previous best set in 2015. RM Sotheby’s led the way, posting an impressive $239.2 million total with 95% of the lots finding new homes during the three-day marathon, 50 of which made in excess of $1 million. Their 1955 Ferrari 410 Sport Spider also took the honours for the most expensive car sold during Monterey Car Week, bringing $22,005,000 (estimate $25,000,000 – 30,000,000).
Other stand-out results included a 5,495-km 1984 Lamborghini Countach LP500 S – recently recommissioned by DK Engineering – selling for $1,061,000 (estimate $700,000 – 900,000); a two-owner 1995 Ferrari F512M in triple black with under 9,000 miles fetched $780,500 (estimate $475,000 – 550,000); and a 16,650-mile 1995 Porsche 928 GTS smashed its $225,000 – 275,000 estimate, taking $406,500. Generous bidding for the charity lot, a one-off Porsche 911 styled on the Cars character Sally Carrera, saw it raise $3,600,000 – a world record for a factory new Porsche.
