A 1964 Aston Martin DB5 claimed the highest price at Bonhams’ Goodwood Members’ Meeting sale on 7 April, fetching £636,600 (estimate £580,000 – 660,000). Chassis 1900/R had been upgraded to Vantage specification and treated to a nut-and-bolt restoration at a cost in excess of £340,000.
The top three was rounded off with a matching numbers 1929 Bentley 4½ Litre Tourer – retaining its original Vanden Plas body – which had been in single family ownership since 1939, selling for £525,000 (estimate £600,000 – 800,000); and a one-of-200 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 Sc Coupe from the Key Museum made £356,500 (estimate £400,000 – 500,000).
A 9,700-mile 1974 Ferrari 365 GT4 BB with Ferrari Classiche certification that was delivered new to Elton John brought £224,250 – just shy of its lower estimate.
Heading the results among the competition machinery was a 1966 McLaren M1B Group 7 'Can-Am' Sports Racer with little history, but a recent new engine and preparation by Lanzante, which took a mid-estimate £172,500.
Notable sales included a 4,941-mile 1986 Porsche 911 Turbo SE 'Slant Nose' at £161,000 (estimate £100,000 – 130,000); a right-hand drive Chapron-built 1966 Citroën DS 21 Décapotable at £117,300 (estimate £110,000 – 140,000); and a 1961 Jaguar E-Type Series I 3.8 ‘Flat Floor’ Coupe that was restored by the E-Type Centre in 2002 smashed its £60,000 – 70,000 guide, changing hands for £115,000.
Bonhams reported a sale total of £5.61 million and a sell-through rate of 70%.
Star performers at H&H’s 10 April auction included a left-hand drive 1963 Jaguar E-Type 3.8 Roadster with modern upgrades, comfortably exceeding its conservative estimate of £50,000 – 60,000 with a winning bid at £118,687; a 35,000-mile 1992 Aston Martin Virage at £45,000 (estimate £35,000 – 40,000); and a two-owner 1963 Austin Mini 850 Super De Luxe with only 7,700 miles from new which went for £14,062.
Both Lancia Lambda Specials offered at Brightwells’ on 10 April found new homes; the 1924 'Julian Jane Special' drew a mid-estimate £112,000, and the 1930 example sold for £38,080 (estimate £45,000 – 60,000).
A left-hand drive 1961 Jaguar E-Type Series I 3.8 ‘Flat Floor’ Roadster in need of restoration blitzed its £45,000 – 50,000 guide, achieving £64,960, while a ‘73 Series III V12 Roadster raised a mid-estimate £76,160.
Anglia Car Auctions’ 13 April sale saw a 2001 Ferrari 456M GTA bring £35,510 (estimate £36,000 – 40,000). The left-hand drive example had spent the majority of its life in a private collection in Dubai, being imported into the UK in 2016, and showed a warranted 20,431 miles.
