Record prices were achieved at RM Sotheby’s inaugural Essen sale on 11-12 April, with a trio of Lancia Stradales stealing the headlines. Setting new world auction records were a 2,200-km 1985 Delta S4 at €1,040,000 and a 3,500-km 1982 037 Rally at €770,000 – both cars making more than double their lower estimates; while a three-owner 11,800-km 1975 Stratos fetched €545,000 (estimate €480,000 – 520,000).
Success among the Mercedes-Benzes on offer included a 1937 540K Cabriolet A at a mid-estimate €2,255,000 – the top price at the two-day sale; a 1959 300 SL Roadster with fitted luggage and original factory hardtop went for €893,750 (estimate €850,000 – 1,000,000); and a 1955 300 Sc Coupe – first used as a works test car – that emerged from a meticulous two-year restoration by renown marque experts Kienle in 2009 made €432,500 (estimate €450,000 – 550,000).
Strong results from the Youngtimer Collection included a 1984 Mercedes-Benz 500 SEC AMG 5.4 'Wide-Body' at €161,000 – a new world record (estimate €90,000 – 120,000); a 1979 Mercedes-Benz 500 TE AMG doubled its upper estimate, selling for €143,750; and a 1988 Porsche 928 Koenig showing 17,188-km brought €70,150 (estimate €50,000 – 60,000).
A 1996 Porsche 911 Turbo that was converted in 2015 to the full 580hp RUF Turbo R spec by Porsche Centre Son in Norway at a cost of some €130,000 changed hands for €230,000 (estimate €200,000 – 250,000).
RM Sotheby’s generated a sale total of €18.7 million with a sell-through rate of 86%.
