A 1933 Alvis Speed 20 SA Vanden Plas Tourer achieved a mid-estimate £79,520 at Brightwells on 11 April.
Earlier in the day Brightwells’ 1960 Jaguar XK 150 SE 3.8 FHC which had covered just 3,300 miles since the completion of a 10-year nut-and-bolt restoration made £77,280 (estimate £70,000 – 75,000); while the first production spec Triumph TR5 took £56,000 (estimate £50,000 – 60,000) and a 1930 Morgan 3 Wheeler Super Sport in need of recommissioning brought £34,720 (estimate £32,000 – 34,000).
Pre-war machinery also topped the results at Charterhouse on 11 April. A 1933 MG J2 Midget fetched £22,000 (estimate £25,000 – 28,000), as did a 1936 MG TA (estimate £26,000 – 28,000); and a 1936 Austin Seven Ulster LWB Replica sold for £10,500 (estimate £12,000 – 15,000).
Jaguars ruled at Anglia Car Auctions, headed by recently repainted 1973 E-Type Series III V12 Roadster at £83,740 (estimate £75,000 – 90,000). Other highlights included a 1958 Jaguar XK 150 3.4 Drophead Coupe at £83,000 (estimate £90,000 – 110,000); a 1965 Jaguar E-Type Series I 4.2 Coupe at £64,660 (estimate £50,000 – 60,000); and the ex-Ronnie McCartney 1963 Jaguar Mk II Rally Car made over double its lower estimate, taking £48,760.
Richard Edmonds’ pre-sale star – a 1968 Aston Martin DB6 – changed hands for £135,000 (estimate £160,000 – 170,000) on 14 April; while a comprehensively restored left-hand drive 1954 Jaguar XK 120 sold at its lower estimate of £75,000 and a 1929 Austin Seven Swallow Sports soared past its £18,000 – 25,000 estimate, going for £40,000.
A four-owner 1965 Mercedes-Benz 230 SL was the top seller at Barons’ 21 April sale, finding a new home at £51,700 (estimate £45,000 – 55,000).
Star performer at H&H’s Buxton auction on 25 April was a 1960 Daimler SP250 – the subject of a body-off restoration and upgrade to B-Spec – selling for £43,312 (estimate £40,000 – 50,000).
Notable sales among the British machinery on offer at SWVA included a 1930 Lagonda Special at £83,000 – over double its lower estimate; a 1953 Bristol 403 that spent the majority of its life in Australia raised £44,000 (estimate £46,000 – 48,000); and a left-hand drive restoration project 1963 Jaguar E-Type Series I 3.8 Coupe drew £42,000 (estimate £25,000 – 30,000).
