RM Sotheby’s, Monterey, USA - 25 August, 2018
The Monterey auctions once again provided the year’s most valuable sale, with RM Sotheby’s 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO changing hands for $48,405,000, setting a new world record for the most expensive car ever sold at auction.
With only 36 250 GTOs built they are rarely offered for sale and have long been regarded as the Holy Grail among classic car collectors. Chassis 3413GT was upgraded by Scaglietti in 1964 to the later Series II coachwork, and its well documented competition career included class wins at the Targa Florio in 1963 and ’64, plus outright honours for David Piper in the 1965 Redex Trophy race at Brands Hatch.
