RM Sotheby’s returns to Maranello for its single-marque Ferrari – Leggenda e Passione sale on 9 September, held as part of the marque’s 70th anniversary celebrations.
Sharing the top honours among the 41 cars entered is the 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Competizione, one of just 74 alloy-bodied competizione examples built (estimate €8,500,000 – 10,000,000) and a 32,586-km 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider with an estimate of €7,500,000 – 9,500,000.
Competition machinery on offer includes a 1955 Ferrari 750 Monza with period racing history in Italy, Cuba and Venezuela (estimate €3,400,000 – 3,800,000); a 1994 Ferrari 333 SP – one of only a few 333 SPs never to have been used for competitive racing (estimate €2,800,000 – 3,300,000); and the ex-Scuderia Corsa 2016 Ferrari 488 GTE, a class-winner at the 2016 Sebring 12 Hours and Watkins Glen 6 Hours (estimate €500,000 – 700,000).
Other notable highlights include the only road-going ‘Alloy’ Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona – offered in ‘barn-find’ condition after being stored for nearly 40 years (estimate €1,400,000 – 1,700,000); a 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Series I, one of just 40 Series I examples produced (estimate €4,700,000 – 5,500,000); a 729-km 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO (estimate €3,250,000 – 4,000,000); and a one-owner 26,500-km 1973 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS (estimate €375,000 – 450,000).
Star attraction at Bonhams’ Chantilly sale on 10 September is a unique 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster built to SLS aluminium competition specifications (estimate €1,500,000 – 2,500,000). The car started life as a standard SL Roadster until 1986 when the owner set about recreating Paul O'Shea's original aluminium-bodied 300 SLS Competition Roadster; commissioning Zagato to create the body using O'Shea's original plans which were discovered in the Mercedes-Benz archives.
Pre-war highlights include a two elegant Horch 853s; a recently restored 1936 Spezialroadster design (estimate €900,000 – 1,200,000) and a 1937 ‘Stromlinien’ coupe design (estimate €700,000 – 900,000).
Other top-tier entries include a 1960 Maserati 3500 GT Spyder, one of some 20 ‘pre-series’ examples known to survive (estimate €800,000 – 1,000,000); a 1953 Aston Martin DB2 Vantage Cabriolet (estimate €370,000 – 470,000); and a 1965 Citroën DS21 Le Caddy Convertible, one of 34 produced (estimate €340,000 – 380,000).
