Bonhams returns to Scottsdale for its season-opening sale on 25 January, where the line-up is headed by a 1931 Duesenberg Model J Convertible Sedan that was originally owned by Her Majesty Queen Maria of Yugoslavia. One of two Model Js displayed at the 1931 Paris Salon with coachwork by Carrosserie Franay, it claimed a number of concours awards soon after the completion of a comprehensive restoration in 1996, and took second in class at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in 2005 (estimate $2,000,000 – 3,000,000).
The top-three also features a 1936 Bugatti Type 57 Atalante Sunroof Coupe which competed in the Rallye des Alpes, Monte Carlo and Rome-Liege-Rome rallies (estimate $1,500,000 – 1,800,000), and a US-delivered matching-numbers 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing (estimate $1,500,000 – 1,700,000); while a 1962 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL (estimate $140,000 – 160,000) is one of 27 cars offered without reserve from the Maine Classic Car Museum Collection.

A barely-used 2020 McLaren Speedtail, showing only 54 miles from new, is set to cross the block at RM Sotheby’s Arizona sale later the same day with a guide of $2,000,000 – 2,500,000. Porsche’s entry to the hybrid hypercar market is also offer, its three-owner 2015 918 Spyder finished in white has 2,095 miles and is optioned with the desirable front-axle lift system (estimate $1,900,000 – 2,200,000).
Eighties icons include a 1987 Porsche 959 Komfort, recently upgraded by marque specialist Canepa to its $35,000 ‘959 SC’ performance suspension package (estimate $1,700,000 – 1,850,000); a well-preserved 1984 Audi Sport Quattro with 8,806km and known provenance from new (estimate $575,000 – 700,000); and a US-market, 15,430-km 1989 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary that has been owned by the consignor since 1999 (estimate $450,000 – 550,000).

Barrett-Jackson’ nine-day Scottsdale marathon gets underway on 20 January with a catalogue of more than 1,900 lots, most of which will be sold without reserve. Star attraction is a 2015 Ferrari LaFerrari owned by Sammy Hagar – the ex-frontman of Van Halen. Hagar has covered some 1,100 miles in the car he custom designed in cream, inspired by a picture of a 1960s Ferrari he saw at the Maranello factory during a visit in 2014.
