Two significant single-owner collections with an emphasis on German machinery are set to cross the block at RM Sotheby’s Munich sale on 23 November. Blue-chip entries from The Aumann Collection include an ex-Works Mercedes Type 122 that finished eighth in the 1923 Indianapolis 500 (estimate €3,800,000 – 5,000,000); a 1929 Mercedes-Benz 710 SS Roadster with coachwork by Corsica that joined the collection in 1998 (estimate €3,500,000 – 4,500,000); and a matching-numbers 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder with SCCA race history in period (estimate €3,400,000 – 4,200,000).
Jewel in The Munich Masterpieces Collection is a 33,862-km 1979 BMW M1 with unique paintwork by Walter Maurer. Maurer was involved in BMW’s famous Art Car projects in the 1970s, working with Alexander Calder, Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein and Ernst Fuchs, and chassis 1135 is believed to be the sole M1 road car with Maurer’s ‘Exclusiv’ finish (estimate €450,000 – 550,000).
Elsewhere, RM’s 2022 Ferrari Monza SP1 is one of only 499 examples produced, owned from new by the consignor it’s covered 1,903km (estimate €3,000,000 – 3,500,000), while the 46-km 2021 Aston Martin V12 Speedster on offer is even rarer, with just 88 built (estimate €780,000 – 1,080,000).
Highlights among the young timers include a 1984 Mercedes-Benz 500 SEC ‘Gullwing’, one of 57 converted by Styling Garage which doubled its list price (estimate €350,000 – 400,000); a 1983 BMW Alpina B9 3.5 Coupe that has resided with its current owner in Norway since 2012 and has covered 160,118km (estimate €75,000 – 100,000); and a two-owner Japanese-spec 1988 BMW M3 with 63,082km (estimate €100,000 – 140,000).
