RM Sotheby’s heads to Hershey, Pennsylvania for its ninth annual sale on 8-9 October. The line-up of 149 lots is heavily weighted towards pre-war cars, star attraction being the 1911 Oldsmobile Autocrat “Yellow Peril” with a pre-sale estimate of $700,000 – 850,000. Chassis number 65877 was actively campaigned by its original owner, the wealthy and eccentric John Henry Greenway Albert of Baltimore. Largely undefeated, “Yellow Peril” successfully raced on many dirt and board tracks in period, remaining in Albert’s ownership until his untimely passing in 1968.
Other entries include; a 1915 Cretors Model C Popcorn Wagon, formerly of Harrah’s Automobile Collection (estimate $250,000 - 325,000); a 1924 Marmon Model 34C Two-Passenger Speedster (estimate $125,000 - 175,000); and an unrestored 1931 Stutz DV-32 Convertible, owned by the Pettit family for six decades (estimate $175,000 - 225,000).
Bonhams returns to the Simeone Museum in Philadelphia for their fourth annual autumn sale entitled 'Preserving the Automobile'. A 1907 Stearns 60hp Seven Passenger Touring heads the pre-war offering (estimate $650,000 – 850,000). Other notable lots include a barn-find 1908 Rainier Model D 45/50hp Seven Passenger Touring (estimate $250,000 – 350,000) and a 1913 Napier T44 30/35hp Touring Car with coachwork by Cunard (estimate $150,000 – 180,000).
Highlights from the du Pont family collection on offer include a 1938 Morgan Super Sports (estimate $15,000 – 25,000) and a pair of unrestored Cooper F3 cars; a 1952 Cooper-Norton Mark VI (estimate $15,000 – 20,000) and a 1958 Cooper Mark XII (estimate $20,000 – 30,000).
