A 1929 Duesenberg Model J ‘Disappearing Top’ Convertible Coupe by Murphy leads the entries at RM Sotheby’s 30 July Motor City sale in Plymouth, Michigan, estimated at $1,250,000 – 1,650,000. Engine number J-119 is one of only 25 examples built in this body style and has formed part of the renowned collections of Melvin Clemans and Gifford Oborne before Eric Bardeen purchased the car in the early ‘90s. All proceeds from its sale will benefit Michigan’s Hillsdale College.
Other significant American pre-war classics include a 1930 Cord L-29 Cabriolet, owned by the late Wendell Gates II since 1946 (estimate $150,000 – 200,000); a 1933 Packard Twelve Coupe Roadster (estimate $400,000 – 475,000); and a 1934 Pierce-Arrow Eight Silver Arrow (estimate $225,000 – 275,000).
Other highlights include a 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona with a pre-sale estimate of $625,000 – 675,000; a 17,171-km 1988 Ferrari 328 GTS (estimate $100,000 – 140,000); a 2006 Saleen S7 with just over 300 miles from new (estimate $650,000 – 725,000); a 9,700-mile 2006 Ford GT Heritage Edition (estimate $375,000 – 425,000); and a 1958 Porsche 356 A Speedster, owned by the entertainer James Darren since the mid-1970s (estimate $275,000 – 350,000).
