The major auction activity in January is centred on the annual Scottsdale sales, with Bonhams’ 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider claiming the bragging rights for the headline car. Chassis number 2277 GT is the 11th of 56 short-wheelbase California Spiders built and was exhibited at the 1961 Brussels Motor Show, prior to being delivered to its first owner in Milan. In the absence of a published estimate the market will no doubt consider the $17,160,000 Gooding & Company achieved for their closed headlight SWB California Spider at last year’s Amelia Island auction as an indicator of price.
Bonhams entry list features ten cars with estimates exceeding $1 million, including; the ex-Bob Jane 1963 Australian GT Championship winning 1963 Jaguar E-Type Lightweight, one of 12 factory lightweights produced (estimate $7,500,000 – 9,000,000); a 1952 Works Ferrari 340 America Spider Competizione with an enviable period competition history which included the 1952 Mille Miglia, Le Mans 24 Hours and Targa Florio in the hands of Taruffi, Trintignant and Bracco among others (estimate $7,500,000 – 9,000,000); and a 1928 Mercedes-Benz Typ S 26/120/180-Supercharged which collected multiple awards at the 1996 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance following a comprehensive restoration (estimate $5,000,000 – 6,000,000).
