Stoneleigh’s Race Retro show once again plays host to Silverstone Auctions’ three-day Competition and Classic Car sale from 23-25 February, with a brace of 1980s poster cars among the early entries. The 1981 Ferrari 512 BB on offer features Koenig modifications which were completed in 1982 to accommodate the wider wheels and tyres of its racing cousin – the 512 BB LM. This left-hand drive example was supplied new to its first owner in Germany and now shows 42,000km (estimate £250,000 – 300,000).
Silverstone’s Lamborghini Countach LP500S is the ex-Barry Robinson car which set 12 British Outright Speed records in 1983. Purchased by the vendor in 2014 following 10 years in storage, it carries a pre-sale estimate of £260,000 – 290,000.
A 1956 Austin-Healey 100M 'Le Mans' Roadster is estimated at £160,000 – 185,000. The car is one of just 640 'Works' built 100M 'Le Mans' Roadsters and was restored by renowned experts JME Healeys of Warwick in 2013.
Celebrity cars on offer include an 8,663-mile 1997 Aston Martin V8 Vantage V550 originally owned by Elton John (estimate £190,000 – 240,000), plus two of Rowan Atkinson’s current stable; a 1989 Lancia Thema 8.32 and an 80,500-km 1993 Mercedes-Benz 500E – both offered at no reserve.
Notable highlights among the competition cars include; a 1960 Cooper Monaco T57 MKII, recently rebuilt and prepared by Martin Stretton (estimate £160,000 – 190,000); an ex-Colin McRae 1999 Ford Focus WRC Rally Car (estimate £120,000 – 140,000); and a 1993 Subaru Legacy RS Group A, driven by Ari Vatanen and Richard Burns (estimate £120,000 – 140,000).
Brightwells sale on 1 February features a 72,000-mile 2006 Aston Martin V8 Vantage (estimate £28,000 – 30,000) and one of the last Land Rover Defender 110 XS Double Cabs produced, which has only covered 271 miles from new (estimate £28,000 – 30,000).
A 1923 Crossley 19-6 Landaulette which is believed to be the last remaining example of the model is set to go under the hammer at Mathewsons on 10 February. With coachwork by Maythorn & Son of Biggleswade, the car comes complete with some wonderful touches including a luggage box, hamper and whiskey dispenser (estimate £55,000 – 65,000).
Star attractions at Charterhouse the following day are a 1951 Jaguar XK 120 Roadster which has been owned by the vendor since 1969 and was the subject of a body off restoration in 2010 (estimate £80,000 – 90,000), together with a 1962 Lotus Super Seven S2 Cosworth which has recently been recommissioned (estimate £25,000 – 28,000).
Highlights among the inventory at Morris Leslie’s 17 February sale include a 51,402-mile 1973 Rover 3500 (estimate £2,000 – 2,500); a 35,545-mile 1990 Jaguar XJS 3.6 (estimate £5,500 – 6,000); a 41,871-mile 2008 Aston Martin DB9 (estimate £38,000 – 40,000); and a four-owner right-hand drive 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE (estimate £16,000 – 18,000).
Notable Jaguars consigned to Barons sale on 27 February include a comprehensively restored 1962 E-Type Series I 3.8 Fixed Head Coupe (estimate £130,000 – 150,000); a 1963 E-Type Series I 3.8 Roadster restoration project which is described as 98% complete (estimate £35,000 – 40,000); and a 2,745-mile one-owner 1989 XJS which had its V12 engine replaced with a 5.7 Corvette unit in 1991 by a Jaguar specialist in Dallas (estimate £33,000 – 40,000).
