Silverstone Auctions kick off their 2017 season with three days of sales held during the Race Retro show from 24 – 26 February. Heading the entries in Friday’s Competition Car sale is a 1989 Aston Martin AMR1, estimated at £500,000 – 550,000. Chassis number AMR1/05 was raced in period by Brian Redman, David Leslie and David Sears among others, and has more recently made regular appearances in the Historic Group C championship – scoring an outright victory in October 2016 in the hands of Nick Minassian.
Also set to go under the hammer is a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro, with a pre-sale estimate of £65,000 – 75,000. The car was run by Bill Shaw Racing for Roy Pierpoint’s assault on the 1970 British Saloon Car Championship, and subsequently achieved notable success in the hands of Martin Thomas during 1971 – 1973. The Camaro’s race long battle with Mike Crabtree’s Ford Escort and Gerry Marshall’s Vauxhall Viva in the 1971 Iberia Trophy Race at Crystal Palace earning a well-deserved place in the BBC's '100 Greatest Sporting Moments'.
Other highlights include an ex-David Leslie 1996 Honda Accord Super Tourer, estimated at £60,000 – 70,000; Mike Jordan’s 2016 Goodwood Revival winning Austin A30 (estimate £33,000 – 38,000); a 1968 Ginetta G16, the final G16 chassis built (estimate £90,000 – 110,000); and a ‘barn-find’ 1973 Ford Capri RS 2600 (estimate £25,000 – 35,000).
A right-hand drive 1974 Ferrari Dino 246 GT showing 34,935 miles is estimated at £300,000 – 350,000. Ordered with flared wheel arches and Campagnolo wheels from new, the car was restored by renowned marque specialist Nick Cartwright in 2015 and comes complete with 29 MOT certificates from 1977.
Elsewhere, highlights include a 33,800-mile 2000 Ferrari 550 Maranello World Speed Record, one of 33 built (estimate £180,000 – 220,000); a 1970 Aston Martin DBS Vantage (estimate £115,000 – 130,000); a 1939 4¼ Litre Bentley “Rusty Turner” Special, ex-Victor Gauntlet and Stanley Mann (estimate 110,000 – 140,000); and a one-owner 7,017-mile 1998 Ferrari F355 (estimate £85,000 – 100,000).
A 1933 Rolls-Royce 20/25 Sports Saloon is the star attraction at Mathewsons 11 February sale (estimate £30,000 – 35,000). The car, with coachwork by Thrupp & Maberly, was treated to a re-spray 21 years ago and a mechanical overhaul in 2011.
Charterhouse’s 12 February sale includes a 1953 Jaguar XK 120 Roadster with period racing history that has been in single-family ownership since 1959 (estimate £60,000 – 65,000).
A 1988 De Tomaso Longchamp GTS has been consigned to Morris Leslie’s 18 February sale. This late Series 2 right-hand drive example is one of an estimated 395 Longchamp coupes built between 1972 and 1989, and carries a pre-sale estimate of £20,000 – 23,000.
Early entries at H & H’s Donington Park sale on 23 February include a three-owner 1960 Jaguar Mk II 2.4 which has been dry stored since it was last used in the 1970s – offered at no reserve; a 1987 Mitsubishi Starion Turbo (estimate £3,000 – 4,000); and a 38,150-mile 1990 Jaguar XJR-S 6.0, in current ownership since 1995 (estimate £14,000 – 16,000).
Barons’ 28 February sale includes a 1977 Autobianchi Bianchina Giardiniera – the estate version of the Fiat 500 – with a full-length ‘panoramica’ sunroof (estimate £6,000 – 7,000); a 1992 Porsche 968 Cabriolet, imported from Japan in 2016 (estimate £15,000 – 18,000); and an 81,000-mile Bentley Continental R (estimate £34,000 – 36,000).
