RM Sotheby’s heads to New York for its season-ending ‘Icons’ sale on 6 December. Star attraction is a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider Competizione, with a pre-sale estimate of $14,000,000 – 17,000,000. Chassis 1451GT – one of just eight aluminium-bodied examples built – enjoyed a brief but successful competition career which included a 3rd in class and 5th overall at the 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans. Following the completion of its restoration in 2011 to its original Le Mans livery the car picked up a platinum award at the 2011 Cavallino Classic.
Other top-tier classics include a 1952 Jaguar C-Type, raced by Phil Hill in period (estimate $5,500,000 – 7,000,000); a concours award-winning 1965 Aston Martin DB5 convertible (estimate $2,450,000 – 2,650,000); a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet which has covered just 600 miles since the completion of a comprehensive restoration (estimate $1,500,000 – 1,800,000); and a 1969 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 – the final prototype and the first production Daytona (estimate $1,400,000 – 1,700,000).
Hypercars and modern collectibles also feature prominently in the 32-lot sale. An unregistered 2018 Bugatti Chiron with just 250 test miles from new is estimated at $3,500,000 – 4,000,000; a 53-mile 2014 Ferrari LaFerrari is $3,250,000 – 3,750,000; a single-owner 4,943-mile 2014 Pagani Huayra carries a guide of $1,900,000 – 2,300,000; and a single-owner 270-mile 2015 Porsche 918 'Weissach' Spyder is listed at $1,700,000 – 1,900,000.
Other notable highlights include a one-off 1952 Chrysler D'Elegance, created for the show circuit through Chrysler’s collaboration with Ghia (estimate $900,000 – 1,100,000); a 1948 Cadillac Series 62 Cabriolet by Saoutchik, one of only two built (estimate $850,000 – 1,000,000); and a unique 1958 Austin-Healey 100/6 with its brightwork plated in gold which was exhibited at the 1958 Earls Court Motor Show (estimate $350,000 – 550,000).
